Rumor: Blockbuster Video moving?

2/19/2008:

I’ve overheard that because of rising rents, Blockbuster Video may be moving to the ill-fated Hollywood Video location uptown at 12th and Hudson Streets.

With other tenants being chased away by double and triple rent increases (such as Mailboxes, etc.), it wouldn’t surprise me at all. Even though Blockbuster is a large corporation, they are hovering near their all-time low stock price, so perhaps it makes sense.

One thing this might help is clear up some of the double-parking on Washington Street, with people constantly dropping their DVD’s off. On the other hand, that’ll just make the Shipyard complex that much worse, with the already amped-up coffee addicts picking up their overpriced Starbucks.

What would be a good replacement for Blockbuster if it did indeed move?

I think Tony Soprano is opening up a Jamba Juice there.
According to a store employee they aren’t going anywhere and they still have 2 more years on their lease. Apparently the regional manager was looking at possible EXPANSION because of how profitable Hoboken has been not to relocate the existing store. I can’t say I understand why they would be interested in a location where another video store has failed but that is what they are saying occurred. If true, I guess they aren’t as doomed as some on this site would have you believe…
i heard a lease is already out on the blockbuster space for someone new.

200,000 SF of retail, is that right? Seems like a lot.

200,000 SF at Maxwell Place sounds like a nice place for a big future homeless shelter. How about closing 3rd/Bloomfield and have the homeless relocate there? There’s more sun and grass for them too at the “new” public park. Do you think the upscale crowd will go for it? It’s about sharing the burden.

I’ve been wondering about Maxwell Place also. All that square footage that looked promising until just recently. It seems like there’s only so many consumers for the area. Sure the existing places are doing OK, but repetition seems pretty likely. Either that or 30 nail salons.
