Reader mail: Harrassed by cop

2/9/2008:

Last night, a Hoboken411 reader had a run-in with an aggressive driver who claimed to be a cop. Here’s her story:

“At about 10:30pm Friday, I was walking home from an evening in NYC with my son and was crossing Willow Street and 5th. We were in the crosswalk trying to cross the street. This black Toyota sped up as we were trying to cross. In fear, I whacked his car window with my purse. He screeched his car to a stop and got out of his car very aggressively. He let fly the f-word, saying I hit him. “What are you going to f*ckin’ hit me? I told him that he was going to hit me.

He was short with olive skin and wavy black hair.

After he called me a bitch a few times and spewed the f-word several times in front of my son, this other gentleman who came up behind calmed the guy down. He appeared to know him. The guy yelling at me said he was a Hoboken cop. He flashed his badge, but when I wanted to look closer, he flipped it back and said it was good enough for me. I’m not sure if he’s a local cop or not. I calmly took out my camera and took a photo of his license plate. Does anyone out there know this clown?

He was probably one of the cops suing for discrimination. Nah, I doubt he was a cop at all.

I’ve almost been run over many times – pretty much a daily occurence in Hoboken. Something similar happened to me except it was a couple of cops in a cop car and one of them had the balls to cuss at me after he almost hit me.

I don’t know what the problem is. Crappy drivers, yes, but I also see pedestrians doing some stupid stuff when I am driving. My favorite is walking against the light while yapping on a cell phone.

4 incidents, only 1 at night. 2 others were drivers not looking when they pulled out of driveways, and one was a guy on his cellphone who never even looked my way as he sped past me. In the nighttime incident the car was going way too fast on Willow and actually brushed me.

I’ve never made a complaint. Three of the drivers never stopped, and I suspect they had no idea they’d almost hit someone. They just kept going and by the time I looked up they were gone, so there was nothing to report. The one driver that did stop was pulling out of the garage on 4th by St Mary’s, and almost hit my stroller. She hit her brakes and I jerked the stroller out of her way pretty much simultaneously. I could see by her face she was almost as scared as I was, and I let things drop. She had been careless in not looking before she pulled out, and I had been careless in not looking into the drive before I walked across it (my head was off in the clouds). Mine was IMO the greater fault, so there was nothing to pursue.

Maybe you should report it to the police station or perhaps you council person to follow up. He claimed to be a cop but didn’t identify himself, sorry, flashing a badge too fast for you to see it doesn’t count any more than if he mumbled his name incoherently. Also, he has a handicapped plate? What’s up with that?

Hey hobokenarn, I do that. I look both ways, I listen, I wait for lights. I also see daily, idiots that do not stop at stop signs, that like in the stories above disregard that there is someone in the crosswalk.

So coc oen try obeying the traffic laws.
