Hoboken Dog Association – doomed?

What’s up with the Dog Association?

Hoboken411 received a few emails last week indicating that the Hoboken Dog Association has stopped accepting memberships. In fact (and other than dog parades) – not much has been happening with the HDA over the past few years.

In case you didn’t know, 5th Ward Hoboken Councilman Peter Cunningham and his wife Jen were the chief principals of this 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.

No notices were published on the HDA website, in fact the site hasn’t been updated with much since as far back as 2005 or 2006, and now appears to just be a “discount program” for members who paid the HDA the $15 for the annual membership card. Another item of note – is that this tax-exempt organization has never listed it’s current board members or dates of organizational meetings…

The HDA Mission Statement was: “Our mission is to preserve the special relationship between dogs and mankind by protecting and defending the rights of responsible dog ownership, opposing detrimental and supporting appropriate regulations for dog owners, educating the public, promoting standards for safe and civilized treatment of dogs, and enhancing member relations in a variety of informal and formal settings while having fun. We will work with local, state, and federal agencies to identify, develop, and maintain clean, safe, leashed and off-leash recreation areas in new and existing parks.”

Not sure if they felt they’ve met their objectives and no longer need this dog association or what the deal is.

I emailed Peter Cunningham to find out what the status is – and will report back his response.

An association for Hoboken Dogs and their owners… Make sense?

I’d just like to clear up the fact that the HDA is accepting memberships, it’s just that the organization needs more people to get involved to keep it going.

One of the things happening in Hoboken hopefully very soon is the dog park surfaces being addressed. The Director is getting the information now to regrade Church Square, Elysian, and Stevens dog parks. If more people got involved, I think there’s a lot we can do for those dog parks and work together on keeping them cleaner and better maintained.

To the people who are angry about Hoboken Dog owners….well, there’s not much I can say for the few dog owners that do not pick up after their dogs. Plenty of us dog owners clean up after our dogs, and even say things to people that do not. It’s not like a dog owner enjoys stepping in dog poop on their walk to work either.

For those that would be interested, I also got a Facebook group “Hoboken Dog Owners” started. Feel free to join as I’m hoping to use it to get a group of us organized and better the dog community and help us co-exist with the non-pet owners in the city as well.

I went to the HDA website. It permitted me to join. I went to Cornerstone Pets to pay my dues. They wouldn’t take my money. The guy didn’t have any information. I was wondering maybe someone could tell me what was going on? Thanks!

to the guy that was bitten by the boxer…did you check with this Association if they have a record of boxer owners? also, did you go to city hall and ask for records of licenses issued to boxers in hoboken? you were after all in a hoboken city park in a dog run built by the city…and i have never seen any rules/regulations/disclaimers as to expectations of personal safety in these runs. what if you stepped in an a guy with 2 pitbulls was in there and they attacked you and killed you? would the city be responsible? i am betting they would be. not much difference from the attack you suffered other than damages…the responsibility of the city is still there. i bet you could get more than $20k off those stitches!

This is too bad, they were really trying to do some important things like making sure people weren’t smoking in the sh*t laden dog runs. That woman is a word that I wish I could use more often, nasty through and through. Save the animals! (unless you can afford to buy a really expensive purebred and let the shelter dogs die, they’re not pretty enough or a impressive enough for our friends to coo over)!

Let me guess, Peter Cunningham used your dogs to get your votes. You scoundrel!! But wait, he’s a reformer he wouldn’t do anything like that. He’s honest and above all that. Hope he picks up after himself.

More hypocrisy.
