(Note corrections made from original post…) For those that love a laugh, a new weekly comedy show called the Underground Comedy Club takes place Wednesday nights over at Room 84 downtown. No cover charges, either!
Downtown Hoboken is a lot funnier on Wendesdays
Jersey City Comedy Festival founder Craig Mahoney is proud to present a new weekly stand-up showcase Wednesday nights at Room 84 (84 Washington St). Every Wednesday the local nightspot will be transformed into the Underground Comedy Club and host a free show featuring a mix of some of the finest local Hudson County talent, as well as hot up-and-coming working comics from New York City who’ve been seen on Letterman, Conan, MTV, Comedy Central, and more.
“I’ve been producing shows throughout Hoboken and Jersey City for the past two years now,” explains Mahoney, “and while they’ve all been great, one of the problems with the area is the dearth of true performance spaces suited to the art of stand-up. The thing that has me truly excited about Room 84 is that, each and every Wednesday, we will be transforming the entire place into a true comedy club. In (Room 84 owner) Joseph Branco, I’m happy to have a venue owner committed to putting on a really great show and bringing some of the finest comedic talent over from New York. It’s a gorgeous club with a great atmosphere, and we’re going to give local residents something I think they’ll really enjoy.”
The shows will all be free of charge, with a two drink minimum. Mahoney will produce and play host each week to a different group of some of the area’s finest stand-up comics. In addition to bringing over talent from New York, each show will also feature at least one or two comedians who call Hudson County home to give it some local flavor. “The aim is to provide local residents with a true Manhattan comedy club experience without them having to cross the river or pay a cover,” says Mahoney, “And I think we’re going to be very successful at it.”
The lineup of comedians for the Wednesday, October 2nd show is:
- GORDON BAKER-BONE – Part of the Decepticomics comedy tour, host of “Baker-Bone & Friends” at The Stress Factory
- ANTHONY DEVITO – Montreal Just For Laughs festival “New Faces”
- ALISON LEIBY – Host of “It’s A Long Story” at the UCB East, co-author of the e-book “Lean Over: Women, Work, and Women’s Work”
- MARK NORMAND – Conan, Comedy Central
- ALYSSA WOLF – Host of “Comedy Anomaly” in NYC, co-author of the e-book “Lean Over: Women, Work, and Women’s Work”
