Stormy summer weather ahead
Hoboken can expect some stormy summer weather!
We’ve definitely had some hot weather this week, along with localized storms in the area. “Hit or miss” kind of situations with minimal damage or flooding. But that pattern seems to be shifting.
Forecasters are predicting that we may see a trend for the next week that could bring lingering heavy rains more often and with higher intensity. They’re even suggesting that some fairly significant flooding may occur in areas that may fall in the “jackpot” zones (training thunderstorms.) Let’s hope Hoboken isn’t one of them.
The current alert is a flash flood watch until tomorrow evening – with a couple inches of rain, possibly more. Don’t be surprised to see these watches recur many times in the next week. Keep an eye on the Hoboken Tides if you want to understand when Hoboken flooding is more likely to occur.
Flash Flood Watch in effect for Hoboken, NJ
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN NEW YORK HAS ISSUED A FLASH FLOOD WATCH HUDSON COUNTY NEW JERSEY FROM THURSDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH FRIDAY AFTERNOON.
A SLOW MOVING LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL TRACK NORTH FROM THE OHIO VALLEY INTO THE ST LAWRENCE RIVER VALLEY THURSDAY AFTERNOON INTO FRIDAY. HEAVY SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY LIKELY THURSDAY AFTERNOON INTO THURSDAY NIGHT AS THIS SYSTEM INTERACTS WITH A MOIST AND UNSTABLE AIRMASS OVER THE AREA. THIS ACTIVITY WILL CONTINUE INTO FRIDAY.
THIS SETUP IS CONDUCIVE TO BANDS OF HEAVY RAIN SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TRAINING OVER THE SAME AREA. LOCALIZED RAINFALL RATES COULD EXCEED 2 INCHES IN AN HOUR IF THUNDERSTORMS TRAIN OVER THE SAME AREA FOR AN HOUR… WHICH WOULD CAUSE URBAN AND SMALL STREAM FLASH FLOODING.
OVERALL 1 TO 2 INCHES OF RAINFALL ARE EXPECTED ACROSS THE AREA THURSDAY INTO FRIDAY… WITH HIGHER AMOUNTS IN THE PATH OF TRAINING ACTIVITY. THIS WILL LIKELY CAUSE MARKED RISES ON MAIN STEM RIVERS.
ADDITIONAL BOUTS OF HEAVY SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE THIS WEEKEND INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK… WHICH MAY PROLONG THE THREAT FOR FLOODING.
About Hoboken Weather Watch
Although most individuals are in tune with the potential for severe weather, we sometimes like reminding area residents to at least have it in the back of their head. Using our “weather expertise” and long-time residency, we try our best to weed out the less likely possibilities to avoid unnecessary alarm.
