Northern Soul {closed – not by choice}

What a drag! Hoboken’s Northern Soul EVICTED!

Wow, the business world is cut-throat sometimes. The good guys down at Northern Soul were evicted for good as of today. After many months of back and forth, court proceedings, the well-equipped landlord (Liam Benson) got his tenant out of the building.

See this announcement from owner Marc Russell:

northern soul keep the faith Hoboken NJ“Okay folks its time to make this official. It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we have to announce the CLOSURE of your favorite Hoboken bar, Northern Soul, at 557 1st Street.

We have been in a legal dispute with our landlords (Liam and Margaret Benson) for the last year, as of yesterday (5/2/16) the court Marshall changed the locks on the door we have called home for the last 8 plus years.

This was NOT our choice, we wanted to stay and continue serving the local Hoboken community. Unfortunately like many other fallen comrades of late, we simply could not meet financial demands required to stay. We have never once missed a rent payment or had any issues with neighbors or local authorities which makes it tougher being shut down so abruptly. We ran a respectful business and provided an important outlet for the local Arts and Music scene.

We would like to sincerely thank anyone and everyone that ever had a drink at our humble establishment, we appreciate every single last one of you. It truly was our faithful clientele (dogs included) that made the place so special.

This is certainly not the end of the road and we look forward to serving you all again soon! As the old saying goes, Keep the faith ✊🏼”

411 Note: We spoke with Marc earlier today – and after hearing what he had to put up with over they years (and he did it to “keep the peace,”) I came to the conclusion that this whole thing was a blessing in disguise (albeit a disruptive blessing). The new Northern Soul (whenever and wherever they decide to re-open) will be better than ever (times 10!)

Good luck Marc!

What do you get when you stop by Northern Soul on their Grand Opening night, take only 12 quick segments of video, and leave after two beers towards the next destination?

Stop by for a beer soon. You’d be pleased with their diverse selection of tap and bottled beers, unlike most typical taverns.

Grand Opening Party Tonight!

Date: Tonight, Thursday, June 5th
Time: 8 till late
Address: 557 1st st. Hoboken, NJ, 07030
“Please join us for our grand opening party, a very soulful celebration of 1st streets newest establishment. The festivities will include dj’s, hors d’oeuvres, drinks promotions and giveaways. Feel free to pass this email on to any of your friends. See ya there! Cheers, Marc and John.”

3/19/2008 Update:

Ok, not breaking news (who ever said 411 was a newspaper anyway?), but the old Quiet Woman quietly has new owners, and will be changing the name to “Northern Soul.” While that sounds more like a band name, I’m sure they wanted to establish a new identity for the place.

From what I heard, some renovations are planned to spruce up the place, and have already even installed a new red felt on the pool table.

I was there Thurs. for the opening party and the space looks much better than it used to. Good selection of same uncommon European beers, though the choice of domestics is, strangely, sparse.

The bathrooms are still atrocious, really bad. They threw a candle in there to offset the mildew coming from the walls.

No real specials to speak of on opening night, which I thought was weak. It was $10 or $12 for a pitcher of Bud Light or something, but nothing for the good beers that they should be trying to promote.

You can change the sign, but this place still has the same old red nosed irish drunks….
Place has been eeeeeempty. Walked by on a Saturday night and there were 8 people at the most in there(incl bartenders).
Really, an empty bar on a Saturday night during the summer? who would have thought.

Place is actually ok, although, I did notice some of the old patrons of the Quiet Woman there the other night. Not only did it need a makoever, it needed new customers. They were probably the worst part about the old Quiet Woman, old, weird, stuck in some college warp.

Oh well, good luck new guys.

Place was PACKED on the Grand Opening! Hope these guys can make it. They seem to really care about the bar and their customers. Big change from the previous owners.

It may seem like an odd recommendation… but you HAVE to try their agave margaritas!!!
