Garden Cleaners

6/25/2007 Update:

Seems as if they’ve lost their lease!

A reader writes in:

“A sign recently appeared in our beloved Garden Dry Cleaners (corner of Garden and Second): apparently they have lost their lease and are moving out by the end of the month. Garden has been run by a cheerful, efficient mother and daughter team, ably supported by their dogs Oreo and Cookie, who are not efficient in the least, but can usually be found dozing in their dog beds on one of the sunny counters. All four of them are always happy to see you. I moved to Hoboken six years ago when I married my husband, a long-time Hoboken resident, and the women of Garden Cleaners were really some of the first to make me feel welcome, waving to me and my dog when I passed by their window, and even offering her a treat.

I know, the wheels of commerce grind on…but they were and are excellent dry cleaners, decorated their small space with homey plants, and even, for a while, took deliveries for lots of us who couldn’t be home during the day. And on a bad day, Cookie’s kisses could really make you feel better…”

Cary’s is a huge loss. I went there for 14 years for cleaning, laundering and alterations and cannot remember a single problem. The owners sold for health reasons and I will miss them…. they were super.

That is too bad. Cary’s Dry Cleaners at 7th and Willow used to be awesome, but they changed owners in the past month and a half and they are terrible now! I wish the people from Garden Cleaners could’ve bought Cary’s, but at the rate the new owners of Cary’s are going, it might be up for sale again soon!

🙁 This was the first dry cleaning place I used upon my move to Hoboken about 9 years ago. I’ve since moved inconveniently away from this location, but tend to bring certain items of clothing there as I totally trust them and know they’ll do a fabulous job. I’ve also gotten alterations done there. They will be missed!! I think, however, that the family also owns another location on Garden (b/w 3rd/4th perhaps?) I wish them well.
