Fire at 515 Newark Street

Old Rey Foods building fire; squatter discovered

This morning around 10:30am, a fire broke out in first floor of the empty building at 511-521 Newark Street. This is the old Rey Foods building, and owned by former Fire Chief John Cassessa, and plans were in the works to build a high-rise condo tower last year.

Residents of the Skyline Condo opposed the plan, because “it would block their view.”

As the fire was being extinguished, Hoboken Fire Dept. discovered that a homeless squatter was living in the building on the 2nd floor, and “had quite the setup” inside. No one was in the building during the fire. However, Hoboken Police found a man “hiding behind crates” in an adjacent building, and are tending to him now.

The fire was relatively small, and put out in about 15 minutes.

Hernandez lived there for 5 years – did he vote? Hob. Now reported that he was making soup [which accidently caused the fire] and had a organized clothes arrangement. He didn’t need rent control! LOL 😆
