onieals - Onieal's

JUNE 2006

After a few hours of boozing on the rooftop at City Bistro, it seemed apparent that a quick stop at Onieals would be in order.

Lo behold there was exactly one spot left outside. Lucky us.

The inside of the bar was bustling as always with an electric crowd and a good sense of energy. Pretty standard at Onieals.

We were a bit in a hurry (it seemed rain was on it’s way) so we placed our orders without hesitation. Pasta Picante and Cajun Grilled Chicken Sandwich.

The pasta dish had a delicious tomato tang. The chicken and cheese was loaded to perfection. Our reviewer thought the pasta was a bit too stiff for her taste (what woman ever says that?) But the other tasters enjoyed it immensely and would recommend it to anyone.

The Cajun chicken sandwich was another story. While it arrived to the table with great promise, it left the table un-eaten and filled with boo’s. Something was wrong with this particular batch. Had a medicinal taste or some kind of industrial cleaning agent (not that we know what industrial cleaning agent tastes like, but we can always guess). It got sent to the bench, perhaps to play a few games in Double-A ball to get it’s game back on track. Nice try Mr. Cajun.

We always enjoy Onieals. The burgers (which are banned till August) are always reliable, and the staff is most often accomodating and timely.

So much for the quick review. Give Onieals a shot or let us know what your experiences were!

Onieal’s used to be among my fave places for brunch– loved the Eggs Florentine. My friends and I always shared the muffin basket… until one fateful, cruel, winter’s day in 2007…

It was early March, the day after a snowstorm. Five of us went into the restaurant and were lead to a table, immediately. We took off our coats, hung them on our chairs and sat down, toying with the crayons. Then we placed an introductory order for coffee, orange juice and, of course, mini muffins.

We got our coffee and orange juice, but waited an eternity for our muffins. And when the muffins finally did make their way out of the kitchen and onto our table, we realized that they looked a little pale. Not toasted, I guessed, and that was alright.

However, a bite of one of those pale little suckers confirmed their questionable appearance: ugh, they were frozen in the middle!

Never again will we order the muffins. We now go to Trinity for them, and they’re awesome.

HORRIBLE. Period. My worst brunch experience, ever.

I ordered granola/yogurt & fruit. The grapes had mold on them, and I was concerned about the rest of the fruit.

I suggested to the waitress that they toss out the grapes, and showed her the moldy grape. She said, “GROSS!”, and took away the plate. She asked about the granola, which she said was a new mix. I said they were very sugary and tasted a bit like coco puffs. She said they did look like they had a lot of coco on them.

It took 15 minutes for our initial drink order to arrive (coffee & orange juice). When I finished my coffee, the bottom of the cup was full of coffee grinds. The waitress came by 15 minutes later and said, “Oh, there are grinds at the bottom of your cup. Let me get you another one.” 15 minutes later, I received a cold cup of coffee. 15 minutes later, our food arrived. My husband’s eggs benedict were cold.

We were charged for everything, including the moldy fruit. We were also charged for both of my cups of coffee – 2 charges for coffee.
