Video Flashback: Nirvana in Hoboken back in 1989

Almost no one remembers that Nirvana played a huge set over at the former Maxwell’s in Hoboken back in 1989! Heck – most people don’t even remember 1989! (We re-uploaded since Vimeo took our videos hostage.)

VIDEO: Nirvana at Maxwells

Here’s the video from 1989. I think Nirvana was one of the best bands of this generation.

The audio quality is absurdly poor, but it’s nice to see this rare footage. Over twenty minutes of craptastic sounds. You’ll recognize some of their hits towards the end.

Retro Nirvana shots in Hoboken, NJ

Stumbled across a few photos of classic grunge band Nirvana back when they had their historic Hoboken visit in June of 1989 (can you believe that? 31 years ago?)

The left photo on the Hoboken waterfront must have been snapped the day of their show at Maxwell’s (from Twitter user Kcobaindaily) – and the photo on the right was from their show later that night (Flickr user pauliewantsacracker).

Kurt Cobain must have gotten his laundry cues from Hoboken411 – as he wore that exact same shirt in practically every show!

Great find 411! Love it! I realized I was getting old when I heard a Nirvana song playing on Q104.3!

Nirvana was good, but grossly overrated. At best, the Foo Fighters are this generations version of Styx.

I was always told that the baseball stuff in the “Glory Days” video was shot at Stevens. But my sources are not exactly what you would call reliable.

I was an 8th grade student in Brandt School when the news of Cobain’s death got out. I was not properly acquainted with Nirvana’s music at that time, but my friend Peter was. He was so saddened that he drew a memorial to Cobain on his desk. I didn’t understand why he was so upset at that time, but I never forgot what an impact Cobain’s death had on him.

Time hasn’t been kind to most Nirvana songs. Grohl’s Foo Fighters still sound fresh, but the depressing Cobain-driven grunge of Nirvana sounds tortured and dated to me. Smells Like Teen Spirit holds up OK but it’s been played to death. Nothing they did after that measured up.
