Grandmaster Peter Urban Tribute

peter-urban-hoboken-ymca.gifThis Friday, April 20th, there will be a ceremony to honor the late Grandmaster Peter Urban at the Hoboken YMCA. The tribute will begin at 8PM and is free to the public. Grandmaster Urban was a very famous martial artist and teacher, and he is widely recognized as the father of American Goju-Ryu karate.

In the late 1950’s Master Urban used to teach at the Hoboken YMCA and that is why we are celebrating him this year during the Y buildings’ 80th anniversary. There will be a speeches by some of Grandmaster Urban’s most famous students, a demonstration of karate technique, a proclamation by the Mayor of Hoboken declaring the day Peter Urban Day and the unveiling of a plaque in Master Urban’s memory that will be hung in the YMCA lobby.

This is a great opportunity for children to see some amazing demonstrations of martial arts techniques and, more importantly, experience first-hand the respect shown by the students to these great masters and the camraderie enjoyed by this community.
