Hoboken New Jersey Kayaking Season 2011 Hudson River - Summer 2011 Kayaking Days

Kayaking days and river trips in the Hudson River

“Kayaking Days offer a unique opportunity for Hoboken residents and visitors to experience the city from the Hudson River. The programs are free, open to all, and require no reservations. Trained kayakers will be on-hand to provide tips for new paddlers. The boathouse is located in Maxwell Place Park near the intersection of Sinatra Drive and Maxwell Place (metered parking is available on the east side of Sinatra Drive).

Hoboken Boathouse has sponsored free kayaking in Hoboken for the past six years, serving over 4,000 paddlers. The Hoboken Boathouse is a non-profit organization supported by volunteers and borrowed kayaking equipment from the Downtown Boathouse.”

“We are taking paddlers on river trips that arrive for the lottery right before the trip begins each day. You must be able to paddle a sit on kayak for 3 hours. Must be in good cardiovascular shape. The trip can be a real work out! We will run a short little paddle test before we leave just to make sure folks will be able to handle a river trip!

Adults only. You must know how to swim. No reservations in advance. You must show up for a lottery. Paddlers are chosen right before the time of river trips.”

What to expect:

You will turn up before the time posted for a trip at the Maxwell Place Boathouse.
You will write your name on a piece of paper.
Around 12 names will be drawn from a hat at the time posted for the trip–about half for solo athletes, and maybe half for couples.
If your name is not selected, you can try again on another trip date.

This policy does NOT apply to our public kayaking days in the embayment–when all are welcome to paddle close to shore. Those are first-come, first-served as usual.

If you want to participate in a river trip, you must be present at the lottery we have before each trip that day.

River trips are approximately two and a half to three hours long. The river trips will launch and land at The Hoboken Community Boathouse. Paddlers must be in very good physical shape for these trips and must know how to swim. No real kayaking experience is necessary. Take sunscreen, water, a hat and wear clothes that dry quickly.

* Trips may be canceled or changed due to weather and river conditions. Any questions, contact
