60 Second Review: La Isla Cuban Sandwich

As you read on Hoboken411 a few weeks ago – Anna from Hey Delicious! said that La Isla’s Cuban Sandwiches were the best in the Mile Square!

And the editor of 411 here doesn’t disagree with that statement. The pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles on a nice pressed bread with “garlic mojo” certainly is a satisfying sandwich for seven bucks.

(Warning – here comes an alternative opinion….)

However, the other day I was wrapped up in a culinary thought – and came to a realization as the world was head over heels for “Cuban Sandwiches…” – that there’s a reason for this all… and you can have it any time.. without hassle!

The single ingredient that makes this Cuban Sandwich a bit different than your usual sub – is the dang pickles.

Maybe in some instance the “Garlic Mojo,” but in the end – the Cuban Sandwich (even at La Isla) is still just a hero really. The pork, ham and Swiss aren’t extraordinary by any means. In fact, much of the time – the meats are quite pedestrian. It’s the combination of the pickles, the mojo (if used), and the “pressing” of the sandwich that give it that edge…

But if you’re one that enjoys Cuban Sandwiches – but are in a situation you can’t get your fix – here’s a simple solution to fill the gap somewhat. Just ask your server for some crisp pickles (or stock them at home) – and add them to any sandwich you eat. You will enjoy the crunch, added flavor (actual excitement to some individuals) – and more. Who knows, you might even have a sodium overload that’d result in a fun & exciting ride to the emergency room… anything to break up a mundane day at the office, right? Plus – you can get some publicity on your Facebook page with a cell phone pic of you in hospital garb.

I’ve been eating those sandwiches from La Isla since they opened. The best. And Omar the chef did beat Bobby Flay in a throwdown!

I have have eaten many cuban sandwiches and they have ham,pork,swiss and pickles on them but after that the rest of the sandwich varies from place to place. The best was in a place called Abins in the ironbound section of newark.

Just as you can’t judge Chinese food by what’s served to Americans as Chinese you can’t judge a Cuban sandwich by local fare. If you have found that the “pork, ham and Swiss aren’t extraordinary”- you haven’t had a real Cuban sandwich.

I don’t like Cuban sandwiches period. La Ilsla has great food otherwise.
