Reserved for last resort establishments
I spoke with several restaurant owners in and outside of Hoboken – and they advised that it’s NOT a good idea to be on this program, unless you’ve exhausted ALL other opportunities to bring your restaurant back from the brink of ruins. So it has to be a place that is suffering financially. Because not only will the show make the restaurant owner(s) look bad – you have to PAY for the renovations as well.
I can’t think of any places in Hoboken that meet the requirements. Because even some of the dumpier places in town – are still crowded despite the “recession” we’re in. And the two places that I might have suggested (The Mile Square and O’Donoghue’s) already have new high-profile owners taking over.
Looking to ride the Hoboken Wave?
Certainly the producers of the show would love to have a Hoboken establishment on the show – to possibly ride the popularity of the Cake Boss as well as the large television viewing audience that would tune in because of the proximity to New York.
Frankly, I think 90% of the reason any Hoboken restaurants are currently sub-par – is the quality of the staff. From what I gathered speaking with owners, their number one issue is keeping staff. Having a high turnover, even with wages on the high-end of the spectrum, makes it difficult to maintain consistency. You’ll see that from the places where the owners, or staff are there for years – the service is markedly better. Ironically, one of the owners said he visited one of Gordon Ramsay’s restaurants overseas – and had a terrible experience. It’s what happens when you don’t have capable people running the show when you’re not there!
What restaurant is on the brink of failure here in Hoboken? What place fits the Kitchen Nightmares model?
