Sara Deli & Grocery – Mediterranean

Sara Deli & Grocery in Hoboken (was Zena…)

Quick “biz update” here on Hoboken411… The business formerly known at “Zena Grocery & Deli” is now “Sara Deli & Grocery.”

This Mediterranean bodega was previously stunted with some bad reviews (along with some good ones).

The one time we tried, it was an absolute disaster not even worth writing about. Some places just aren’t worth the effort (unless you live on the same block). And we didn’t get good “vibes” inside, either. So they probably tried to change the name to get a better chance at making a first impression (note the cunning re-arranging of “Deli” and “Grocery,” that’ll surely throw people way off!)

While we’ll probably never go here again, we do like the look of the new awning. Big improvement!

I’m not one to post all the time but thought I’d share a pleasant experience from a new business in town. I swung by Zena Market last night to pick up dinner. This place is a true gem. And something we simply don’t have in Hoboken. I believe the place is owned by two brothers and they were extremely friendly. I walked away with a few free samples. Everything was great. We picked up the falafel, hummus, tabouleh, some other bean/ hummus dish, olive mix and one of their fresh breads. All of their “dishes” are kind of small side plates so you can get a lot and sample many new foods. Everything except the bread was homemade. The bread comes from some bakery in NJ (was delivered that day and was fresh). It’s kind of their version of naan. Falafel: very fresh. not overly fried. you could taste all the ingredients. Hummus: incredible. some of the best I’ve tasted Tabouleh: very good. it was great with their bread. Bean/ Hummus Dish: very fresh. I think their hummus goes great with everything so this was another great dish. Olive Mix: the olives were good. they had some sort of pickled beat thing in there. I wasn’t crazy about the pickled veggie but it wasn’t terrible. More of an acquired taste. In the end, I think this place has a chance of making it. I think they fill a void in Hoboken. They have fresh, good and affordable Mediterranean food. I’ll… Read more »
