Ultramarinos

6/24/2010 Update:

Delicious & wholesome. A true Hoboken gem

I just wanted to give Ultramarino’s a big shout out today – for having some of the most fantastic tomato soup and empanadas! These two items are available daily.

Additionally, the assortment of desserts they have would make you the hit of any party you bring them to! If you haven’t checked them out yet – why not make some time this weekend. Located at 260 3rd St. and open 7 days a week.

See original update for when they opened – after the jump!

2/12/2010:

An exciting and diverse tour of Latin cuisine

How about a big Hoboken welcome for Ultramarinos, “The Marketplace for Latin Kitchen Magic!”

Ultramarinos Hoboken NJ Exterior - Ultramarinos

Pronounced “OOL-TRAH-MAH-REE-NOS,” this new Latin food emporium at 260 3rd Street is what they call a “logical extention” to owners Marciel Presilla and Clara Chaumont’s two well-respected Hoboken restaurants Cucharamama and Zafra.

Occupying a space that had been vacant for over five years (was a flower shop and bakery in the past), this new marketplace is an exciting addition to Hoboken’s rather bland array of similar food establishments.

Prepared food, spices, coffee, cocoa, and more!

The interior of Ultramarinos definitely feels like an escape to another region, with nooks, crannies and all sorts of places to find products they sell. From Tamales, dried herbs and spices, preserves and cooking oils, to cookies, cakes, fruits and vegetables, it’s a very interesting collection of Spanish and Latin American products.

Still feeling a bit cold from the recent snowstorm we had, I tried a chocolate chip cookie ($1) and a cup of cocoa ($6). You might be thinking “$6 for hot cocoa? That must be a misprint!” Well, it’s not – and that had to be the best tasting hot chocolate I’ve ever tried. Dark Venezuelan chocolate, cinnamon, a dash of all-spice and other unique flavors made it a warming hot beverage you’d want to savor for eternity.

Open seven days a week, from 11am – 9pm, Ultramarinos will definitely be a spot I frequent often. So much to try!

They currently offer catering, and will introduce delivery at some point in the future. Check out their website at www.ultramarinos.biz

Hot chocolate is grrreat. Spicy, thick, rich, and molten hot.
I tried their hearth baked fruit, nut, chocolate bread. Delicious!
Can’t wait to try the empanadas and their entire take out menu.
I just wish there was a place to sit and enjoy their hot chocolate.

I’m on the bandwagon…hot chocolate was hands down the best I have had…truffles as well…the kind of place that really makes you realize how far off the mark some other establishments are. This place is a true gem. Makes you proud to live in this town when there are establishments like this!

I stopped in and ordered the cuban pork sandwich. It was one of the better sandwiches i’ve had in a while. Bread was toasted, pork was tender. Reasonably priced at $7
