Broken Glass and Hoboken Pride

[Continuing the ORIGINAL Hoboken411 “Photo of the Day” series…]

Hoboken Photo of the Day – 2/8/2010

Don’t know about you guys, but myself and countless people I’ve personally spoken with – have noticed a sudden increase in the amount of BROKEN GLASS on Hoboken sidewalks. Not just one isolated area, but all over town.

And even Hoboken411 Mascot Oscar has suffered, slicing the pads on one of his paws WIDE OPEN last week. Now he’s limping around like a sad puppy. (don’t worry, I cleaned it out, tweezed the glass, ointment, etc. – just takes a while to heal)

  • Why aren’t the shards of sharp glass cleaned up immediately?
  • Who’s responsible? Garbage collectors? Drunk idiots? Everyone?
  • Where are the Hoboken sidewalk sweepers? Budget cuts?
  • What about property owners? Do they not give a crap?
  • Even if they’re on vacation – what about their neighbors?
  • Does anyone care about their own sidewalks anymore?

Poor Oscar I hope he’s doing better. I noticied over the weekend. There was a store on Washington. I didn’t take notice of the business. It was beyond 6th. Their glass on their front door was broken.

i thought the sidewalk sweepers only do gutters or else businesses on washington street?
sidewalks are the responsibility of the property owner. glass, cracks, snow and all.

It’s out of control back along 7th by the Monroe Center. That block has always been a trash, condom, chicken bone dumping ground, but the entire sidewalk is covered in an array of broken glass…no dogwalks there.

I saw the garbage/recycling pickup guys emptying the bottles outside of Liberty the other day, and one of the bottles fell and broke on the sidewalk. I figured that they’d just leave the broken bottle, but one of the guys grabbed a shovel and broom and swept up most of the glass. He didn’t get all of the glass, but I was kind of surprised that he cleaned any of it up. It would have taken a long time to get all of the little pieces of glass in the brick part of the sidewalk.
