A Holland Tunnel Bus Commute?

1/20/2010:

For the last decade, the ease of commuting played a huge role in helping me choose which jobs I would accept (just look at where I am now!)

Unfortunately, not everyone has that luxury these days – and Hoboken411 reader Gregory (a new Hudson County resident) is wondering if anyone can “hack” his commute to Manhattan – to make it shorter, more convenient or cheaper!

NJ bus routes via the Holland Tunnel NYC Jersey City Hoboken - A Holland Tunnel Bus Commute?

Best transportation method to downtown NYC?

“Greetings!

I live in Jersey City Heights (WEST Hoboken in my book!) and a friend told me about your site — it’s great! I was hoping you could help me answer a question regarding transportation. I am somewhat new to the area and as I mentioned I live in Jersey City Heights and work in Manhattan, right near the Holland Tunnel. I was wondering if you knew of any transportation options (specifically a bus) that goes into Manhattan via the Holland Tunnel and that drops off nearby. Every bus option I’ve found so far goes through the Lincoln Tunnel which is a subway ride (and $89 per month metro card!) away.

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Gregory”

I checked myself, and all the bus routes seem to go either to the Lincoln Tunnel or George Washington Bridge areas.

Are there any ways he can get to where he wants to go with less stops?

Unless you get the Port Authority to change their regulations, no commercial traffic is permitted through the Holland Tunnel.

http://www.panynj.gov/bridges-tunnels/holland-tunnel-traffic-restrictions.html says otherwise.

The NJT 87 on Palisades takes you to Hoboken terminal in one direction, and Journal Square in the other. Path to WTC from either place. Buses on JFK to Journal Square as well.

Try http://hopstop.com/ – enter your source and destination addresses and if you’re willing to take one or more of bus/subway/rail/taxi. It will figure out a few routes for you.

It can even do public transit routes from Hoboken to suburbs of Boston if you’re so inclined. Hoboken to Paris, not so helpful.

Since 9-11-01, all commercial traffic to NYC is barred from the Holland Tunnel. The reader can try to organize a carpool or can take the bus or light rail to the Hoboken Terminal and connect to the PATH or Ferry to get downtown.

They recently lifted that ban. Trucks with 3 or less axles can now use the Holland Tunnel in either direction. I do see buses going though in the morning but I don’t know where they are coming from.
