Emack & Bolio’s -> Pinkberry?

Seems as if Emack & Bolio’s has been closed for a week or so… Rumors “swirling” around that it may become a Pinkberry.

With that being said, I’m ashamed to release today’s “reader contribution” (an ice cream review from last September). I was going to wait for a nice hot day to publish it. See review after the jump.

The Review that never happened

Hoboken411 asked me to give what was once Mola Coffee a looksie. This should be my shortest ‘restaurant’ review because it’s ONLY ice cream. What could go wrong?

I walked over to Emack & Bolio’s Ice Cream 517 Washington Street – and immediately had a sense of relief – a friendly look, not over the top – with interesting flavors and many non-fat and low-fat options. Plus the prices were reasonable. I ordered a waffle cone with Latte-Espresso Chip (non-fat) and Caramel Pecan (low carb). Both flavors were delicious. The ice cream itself is excellent.

That all said – this ice cream needed to be colder. The shopkeeper had a hard time getting it to stay in a cone to begin with (which I didn’t understand) and after I insisted (I didn’t want a picture of ice cream in a cup afterall) – I realized why they didn’t want to put it in a cone. It was not frozen enough. Since I was to be eating the ice cream on my way back to work (outside in the heat) it was a particular problem. Even armed with plenty of napkins and eating at twice my usual ice cream eating pace I made something of a mess.

I’m not sure if they were having trouble with their freezers or what – but the ice cream is good enough to warrant a second try. I have eaten at other Emack & Bolio’s stores and never had a problem (not sure if ever on a very warm day though).

7/10/2007 Update:

Wanted to refresh the old Mola Coffee posting now that I managed to snap a photo of the updated sign. In addition, two men were meddling with the “Porno Moose” sign out front.

This is a favorite spot for many Hoboken residents.

This Emack & Bolio’s sign has been up in Mola Coffee’s window for a few months now.

emackboliocomingsoon - Emack & Bolio's -> Pinkberry?The Emack & Bolio’s website indicates a Hoboken location is “coming soon”.

A 2-minute inquiry with one of the girls working there resulted in a chuckle from both her and even a couple people lounging on the couches. I guess this is an ongoing thing. I don’t frequent Mola, so I didn’t have a clue. But the girl at the counter indicated that this has been going on for quite a few months, and it’s pending some permits (thanks again Hoboken). The conversion to an Emack & Bolio’s store could take place as soon as a few weeks, or as long as six months.

But it’d be interesting to see if the Zagat ratings are correct. Has anyone tried their ice cream? They have 15 locations already across 11 states, so I’d imagine they’re pretty good.

Cafe Mola was one of my favorite places to hang out in Hoboken; now it’s an ice cream shop that sells coffee, and now it looks like it could end up being just an ice cream shop. Is there any place in town where an adult can go and work without being invaded by mommies that ISN’T a bar? The mommy scene is specifically why I avoid Frozen Monkey like the plague. Bring back Cafe Mola! πŸ˜₯

What is the obsession with Pinkberry??!
It’s just not that good.
It is nasty sour, they only have 3 flavors and the stores themselves are creepy.
It’s not even real food.

Pinkberry’s “natural” desserts are made of toxic labratory gunk

Pinkberry, the fast-growing US chain of “all-natural” desserts, just got busted in a class-action suit for packing their food with additives and crap:
The ingredients list for Original Pinkberry has 23 items. Skim milk and nonfat yogurt are listed first, then three kinds of sugar: sucrose, fructose and dextrose. Fructose and maltodextrin, another ingredient, are both laboratory-produced ingredients extracted from corn syrup.
The list includes at least five additives defined by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization as emulsifiers (propylene glycol esters, lactoglycerides, sodium acid pyrophosphate, mono- and diglycerides); four acidifiers (magnesium oxide, calcium fumarate, citric acid, sodium citrate); tocopherol, a natural preservative; and two ingredients β€” starch and maltodextrin β€” that were characterized as fillers by Dr. Gary A. Reineccius, a professor in the department of food science and nutrition at the University of Minnesota and an expert in food additives.

Some of them can be characterized as natural, while others are clearly not, he said.

β€œIsn’t it amazing how many additives it takes to make something taste natural?” Dr. Reineccius said.

The only non-real gunk “food” that should be sold is Kraft Mac and Cheese. Yum.

It actually passed it’s 2008 inspection…if you can believe it. Who do you think got the bed (in the freezer)….the owner or the artist? Not difficult to figure out.
Which one slept on the couch and which one in the freezer? Why did the owner sleep there anyway? Is this legal? Also, why didn’t the health dept do anything about all the dogs in there licking the tables? If this is going to be another food (yogurt or coffee) business, this place needs a new owner for sanitary reasons, at the very least, forget aesthetics . . .
