Biggie’s Clam Bar {consolidating}
Biggie’s Clam Bar closing original location in Hoboken
Another one bites the dust. Biggie’s Clam Bar at 318 Madison Street is shutting down that location in about a month.
While Biggie’s is a successful operation (with another Biggie’s Clam Bar in Hoboken on Newark Street, as well as Carstadt and Ramsey in New Jersey, as well as in Kingsport, Tennessee) – the Madison Street location just had to be “euthanized.”
Damage remained from Hurricane Sandy which somehow was no longer worth fixing. And they also claimed that the west side of town didn’t have sufficient paying customers to appreciate the food enough to sustain this location. The fancier upscale spot downtown apparently appeals to more people.
Tons of places just closing down as of late. The original Grimaldi’s, Antique Bakery (which is coming back eventually), Northern Soul and a few others have bid farewell from “old Hoboken” as well.

Biggie’s adds new location in Hoboken, NJ
3/12/2012 Update:
Biggie’s Clam Bar is already quite a bit of a restaurant operation – with three locations (Hoboken, Carlstadt, and even one in Kingsport, TN!)
They’re getting set to open up a new spot in Hoboken at 36-42 Newark Street soon – taking over the Clam Broth House.
A lot of Hoboken411 readers were wondering why the Clam Broth House lasted barely two years in such a great location, but feel that Biggie’s will fare much better.
Time will tell!

It was an evening after work, my girlfriends and I wanted to get a quick bite to eat at a laid back place that we could show up in sweats, flip flops and tank tops. A place not along Washington Street; somewhere hidden amongst some side streets. We walked in and the atmosphere was like picnic tables indoors, with chalk boards displaying a menu of seafood, burgers, sandwiches and more. I felt like I was in my bathing suit, you know, with the sand stuck to your feet, all sunned out, stepping up to a shack, ordering my food. Memories of the boardwalk almost!
The service was great, they took our order right away and began shucking the clams in front of us. My girlfriend ordered the clam chowder, we shared the clams oreganata and fried clams. I wanted to try the mussels, but they were all out, damnit! We sat outside at a picnic table and they brought out the food to us when it was ready. There must have been 10 or so cars pulling up, families and all, going in picking up orders and pulling off. That place certainly is a gem.
My friend said, the Clam Chowder, which to me looks like minestrone soup, was "good", had a lot of clam bites in it.. I am not a clam chowder eater, but I thought it'd come out creamy. Chowder : a soup or stew of seafood (as clams or fish) usually made with milk or tomatoes, salt pork, onions, and other vegetables (as potatoes) ; also : a soup resembling chowder.

Not that I recall, but it sure does sound like something a grandmother would do. LOL. The only home remedy I remember was a little eyedrop bottle she kept with some sort of liquor in it. This was only used for my toothaches. I actually remember her landlord giving her this for me. Just the horrible taste made me believe it was working.
I just ate at the route 17 location sat night. Place was packed and they had a wait of 30 min. food was good and very inexpensive. I think it will do well. There is a definite need for a seafood place in town.
They make the best steak sandwiches not that chopped up stuff from philly. But the madison street place is special it has ‘starter grease’ like starter for sour dough bread. Best of luck “Brother”. You’ve been a family friend forever. Remember as a kid goin for the dogs and clams and looked forward to getting the fresh watermelon off the ice block outside the store. I miss ya old man pop too.
Did you buy a 15 cents piece or a 25 cents piece?
Best of luck “Brother”. You’ve been a family friend forever. THAT’S RIGHT! LMAO. Depended on how much I ate inside the store.
Did you buy a 15 cents piece or a 25 cents piece?
Can you see the board of health inspectors if they were to sell watermelon on ice like that today? They would have a triple strength stroke and keeled over on the spot.
THAT’S RIGHT! LMAO. Depended on how much I ate inside the store.
True. Never heard of anyone being sick from it either. Today we have the “bactine” moms at the park, spraying cuts and wrapping with multiple bandages. My grandmother would spit on a hanky and I’d be back on the slide in no time. It’s no wonder many become immune to drugs, ointments and penicillin. Have ya ever known a grandma then who didn’t carry a hanky? lol.
Can you see the board of health inspectors if they were to sell watermelon on ice like that today? Did your grandmother keep a silver dollar in the freezer to put on heads bumps??
True. Never heard of anyone being sick from it either. Biggie’s opened a place on the boardwalk in asbury park, across the street from the stone pony, but I was told they closed.Unless they shut down for the winter and will reopen in the spring.
Hope it’s not too greasy! And are they keeping both locations or just moving?
