Many cars vandalized on 5th Street

5/27/2009:

“It’s not mine – who cares if it’s broke?”

Another Hoboken411 Live Police and Fire Action Channel “highlight” – about 15 minutes ago (shortly after 2am) – a group of teen vandals juveniles damaged over 10 vehicles on 5th Street between Washington and Clinton. Mirrors seemed to be the culprit.

Boy, that sucks – especially since some of these modern light-dimming, heated mirrors can cost upwards of $400 or more to repair/replace.

If you’re parked in this general vicinity – pay careful attention to your car the next time you’re nearby.

Go to LA Collision on Observer they only take cash but will give you a pretty low price. Not to mean but it is a Hyundai so don;t bother paying the dealer a fortune. They did work on one of my leases before I turned it in and have done some work on a few of my friends cars as well.

This has happened to me 3 times (the same number of years I’ve owned a car here). It costs $50-75 to glue it back on at either of the auto body places in town (L & A on Observer/Jackson or Spina on Park/14th). Depending on what else they’re doing, I’ve waited anywhere from 30 minutes, to 1.5 hours. The power on the mirror still works even after gluing it on.

Ugh. Walked to my car this afternoon to find that I’ve fallen victim to the Mirror Bandits in the last 5 days since I parked. Mirror’s nowhere to be found.

A few questions:

Is my best bet to go to a Hyundai dealership to get it fixed or is there a decent all-model repair shop close to Hoboken that can order the part?

Is it worth going through auto insurance?

Those of you this happened to, generally how much did it cost to replace and how long did it take? Just wondering what to expect.

Thanks.

9 years and counting in this town and i have seen only ONCE a beat cop – you know, like cops walking around town as a preventative measure? everyone in this town walks everywhere, yet the cops sit in their cars and drive around. i don’t get it. kids, vandals, car thieves – they all think twice if they know an area is heavily patrolled. but hoboken is a wide open town.

one more thought – i constantly hear that the cops don’t have time to worry about vehicle break-ins and need top concentrate on the real crime. really? like what? for a town with a ton of people on top of each other, this is one of the safest places around. quality of life crime IS a top priority – and fucking savages who break car windows should be at the top – not the bottom of their list – especially since the dumb little fucks would be so easy to catch.
