Mail Boxes Etc

6/17/2008 R.I.P. Update:

After forever and a day, Mailboxes, Etc. put the brown paper on the windows, and is finally done.

You can still pick up your mail at the post office, and they left a few notes on the window, including the phrase “Please know that you will truly be missed.”

I bet the reason they truly miss everyone is that they’ll have no one to bitch at all day long! What will they do now?

hoboken mailboxes etc finally closed doomed june 2008 - Mail Boxes Etc

Seems like we already have a “doomed in 2008” business.

Mail Boxes Etc., is apparently going to be another victim of the “You’re raising the rent THAT much?” situation that has forced many small businesses to call it quits. They said they’re going to be gone June 1st, 2008, because their landlord wants to raise the rent 300%!

Now while I’m not privy to how much their rent was before, or how long the lease was, but I’ve heard it’s not uncommon for tenants with long-term leases to get hit with a huge increase to renew. Most people told me that it rarely exceeds 200%, so this tripling of their rent was enough for them to take their envelopes and bubble wrap elsewhere.

What are the people with PO Boxes going to do now?

This place was run by the rudest people I have encountered outside of a McDonald’s.

I would trek all the way to the on at Pavonia for years before giving up my mailbox there. After the Pavonia one was sold the new owner was no where near as customer service oriented.

It is too bad that there isnt a better option in Hoboken! Perhaps someone will renew the real UPS franchise and open a nice business.

Whenever I walked in, I hoped it would be the husband serving me instead of the wife. Of course, she always appeared and took over as if he could never do anything right. I used to have a box there. The next most convenient place for me is in NYC. Newport, where I never go to, has a UPS store, but no parking nearby. My prediction is that the space will be a new nail salon.

Looks like they finally closed. I don’t know how long ago this happened, but today was the first day that I noticed it, so it had to have just been recent, as I walk by there a couple times a day. The front windows are newspapered up and they have some “closed for good” signs…
