Why weren’t the flags at half staff?

9/11/2008:

The anniversary of September 11th, 2001 is now considered “Patriot Day” in America.

This usually means that flags are flown at half staff. They were in Manhattan and pretty much everywhere else… except Hoboken.

Jeez.

MF: The US code quoted by H411 uses “should” instead of “shall” except when referring to presidential proclamations, which themselves are not enforceable laws but more like decrees of etiquette. This means that it is a recommendation rather than a mandate.(No, I am not an attorney, but I have assisted in revising NY State Law after a do-good attorney screwed it up.)

People who fly the flag daily are likely to be concerned about etiquette and might look for guidelines from the President and from US Law in order to do it right. People who burn the flag are concerned about freedom of expression and don’t necessarily give three farts about four farts what the etiquette is.

i saw some building in ny with it at half staff and some not. people should just do whatever they want with it, with or without patriot day designation. i personally would fly it at half staff because what day in this country is more mournful that yesterday? something tells me though that there’s some sort of weird paradox here – that you can’t fly a flag at half staff without a declaration by a president or governor but then you can have these ungrateful granola eating guevara t-shirt wearing fruitloops who can burn it? am i on to something or hopefully incorrect?

The black POW flags seem to be flying at all government buildings such as Port Authority, city hall, etc. Maybe it’s some NJ law or governor executive order back in the 1970s or something.
