2008 Hoboken Muni Raspberry Awards
If there was ever an “awards show” in Hoboken, this would be it!
Here’s what one anonymous Hoboken411 reader envisions as some of the “Winners.”
The 2008 Hoboken Municipal Raspberry Awards
The Colin Powell Good Soldier who Falls on his Sword Award:
General Colin Powell had a distinguished Army career working his way up to being top brass. As a Bush Cabinet Member he was pressured to put a big spin on about Iraq and exaggerate threats of WMDs that were never in fact found. A good man with a great sense of ethics had his reputation tarnished to feed the megalomania of Bush the war mongering president.
Likewise, Dick England, an honorable man who had given the City many years of service as a Purchasing Director was tapped by Roberts as the BA after much turmoil in that position earlier in his Administration. Dick was the perfect soldier that did his master’s bidding by carrying over unpaid Medical Insurance bills year after year. It finally caught up with the Mayor and to England’s credit when pressed he finally told the truth. Robert’s response, he threw Dick under the bus.

The Teflon Award:
This goes to the individual who seemingly always seems to be watched and examined and suspect of many facets of corruption but never gets indicted. He has at times been investigated by the Feds and the State to no avail over the course of many years. Innocent until proven guilty, you gotta love this country! He is no other than Maxwell House public park fence builder and ill-tempered Construction code head honcho: Al Arezzo.
Congratulations Al! Most of the residents and businesses would like to thank you for taking what would be a typical 4-5 month project and stretching it out over a year in a lot of cases. Thanks for breaking our bank.
The Golden Parachute Award:
Carmen Labruno former police chief, hands down what promises to be the most expensive cash out in NJ history of a public official.
The Al Sharpton, I’ll Play the Class Card too Award:
This award goes to Ruben Ramos for his searing commentary on Beth Mason’s proposal to take away his pay from his third public job at the last City Council meeting to raucous ovation of non-taxpayers from the Fourth Ward. Let me repeat part of that. His third public job! How can he possibly do all three jobs and not have any one of those jobs suffer in terms of performance? Question: how many times has a sub filled in for him on his full time teaching job or how many votes has he missed on the Assembly floor. Something has to give. That includes the third salary but I have to admit there are potential pitfalls with such legislation so it should be drafted carefully.
The Horse’s Ass Award:
This could go to a lot of members of Hoboken’s Government but the problems with Hoboken’s Government really start at the top. Thus, the award goes to Dave Roberts who is the shinning example of why you should never put a bon vivant with a penchant for ceremony and a silver spoon in his mouth in charge of a municipality such as Hoboken. But he won the election by convincing enough people his was the best plan in 2005 after 4 years of broken promises starting in 2001.
How do some of those who voted for him feel now? Just wait until you get your 2010 tax bill!
The real driver behind this award are not the mistakes that were made by the Mayor but his insistence that everyone else messed up from Dick England, The CFO firm and the City Council. The buck stops with you Dave.
The History Repeats Itself Award goes to:
John Corea. Got booted out of Wall Street by the NYSE. Gets appointed head of Parking Authority and $1 million dollars in quarters were missing. This non-bid contracted firm Unite Textile Fabricators that he used for collections has alleged ties with the mob. History sure does repeat itself huh? Does a background check ever occur in the Dave Robert’s friends and family patronage plan or was it simply ignored?
