Backyards Bistro – Doomed
Backyards Bistro transfers to “Graveyard Bistro” in Hoboken, NJ
Backyards Bistro at the corner of 8th & Jefferson has been “down for the count” for quite a while in Hoboken. Why didn’t we rush to report? Yeah, exactly – wasn’t a relatively earth-shattering bombshell (except for the handful of local residents that may have frequented the joint due to laziness).
Back when it was The Cup Joint, the place managed to scrape up at least a little amount of “care” that they had a business that served customers. This place? As the 2nd owners of Backyards Bistro assumed ownership, something happened. I felt like I was walking into an alien planet. Something didn’t feel right. It really felt foreign. And out of place. So with that being said, I’m not surprised this establishment faltered. And take a look at the photo below. It really felt like a “dumpy” area. Like a scene out of a desperate 70’s movie, but without the grit and drama.
I think we need to bring back seedy strip clubs. That is exactly the recipe that Hoboken needs to inject some freakin’ life in this town!
Backyards Bistro in Hoboken – Big hits and some misses
3/20/2009 Mini Review:
A friend and I stopped into Backyards Bistro (732 Jefferson) three or four weeks ago and here’s an ultra-simple 411 “Winners & Losers” synopsis.
Winners: Mac & Cheese and the Burger Sliders.
The macaroni & cheese here may quite possibly be the best in Hoboken. “Bacon, Scallions & Blue Cheese.” Was nervous that it might be overwhelmed by the strong taste of blue cheese – totally not the case. Was baked to perfection and had ample crispy bacon flavor. We licked the plate. That good. Same goes for the sliders – the pickles, cheese and sauteed onions combined with the perfectly cooked ground beef and soft potato rolls had me thinking “these are so simply delicious – why can’t every place make ’em this good!?” If you go with a group of people – make sure BOTH of these are on your table.
Losers: Santa Fe chicken and Memphis pulled pork
While not horrific by any means – just “lost” in one aspect or another. The Chicken sandwich sounded delicious on the menu – Bacon, avocado, swiss, BBQ sauce – but was too much for your tongue to interpret. It lacked identity. Same goes for the pulled pork sandwich. Overwhelmed by their “secret” BBQ sauce – you could have had any meat on there, and you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. Both were filling, but not entirely satisfying.
Meh: Decor & Service
The restaurant is quite simply “plain jane.” Thank god they have windows. We were served by one of the owners – who while a nice guy – shouldn’t ever be a server. Very impersonal and serious.
Bottom line: The sliders and Mac & Cheese are to die for. I did a follow up a couple weeks ago (sliders & fries to go) – and was just as delicious when I ate it 30+ minutes later – the fries were even still crispy. Give it shot today!
Cup Joint becomes “Backyards Bistro” in Hoboken NJ
The old Cup Joint has a new name: Backyards Bistro.
As one Hoboken411 reader said: “It seems they’ve changed their menu, and added a bunch of burgers and paninis.”
After sampling some items during their “soft opening,” a few folks at DC’s Tavern next door said the food was “acceptable” and noted that they’ve apparently improved Macaroni & Cheese by adding some bleu cheese, scallions and bacon to the mix. While another said the sausage & peppers was pretty good, but a bit costly. He did add, however, that it was enough for two meals.
Anyone else try?
