What’s up with 14th St. Pier?
8/4/2008:
One Hoboken411 reader astutely noticed that the gate is locked at the 14th Street pier! (now even less open space in Hoboken). Anyone know the real deal what’s going on?
- Could it be the rumored new NY Waterway Ferry Slip?
- Or just more Hoboken Piers collapsing into the Hudson?
Inquiring minds want to know!
The marina had that half-sunken barge for a while (since removed) which did next to nothing to break the wake from vessels on the river. However, one of the marina’s biggest problems is that NY Waterway captains flat out refuse to follow the law that they maintain headway speed until they are out into the navigable channel. They leave an enormous wake as they speed in and out of the ferry slip, which is against the law. They are well aware of this too.
However, moving the slip over one pier is not going to do much of anything to help the marina as long as NY Waterway captains keep operating this way.
I had a boat there years ago the ferry is the least of the problems with that marina. There is no wave attenuator, so anytime a ferry, coal barge, cruise ship or cigarette boat goes by all the boats bang into the docks and sometimes other boats.
Most marina’s that care about their customers install wave attenuators, moving the ferry a few yards north is going to do nothing for that marina.
I walked by today and asked a worker on the pier what was happening. He said they are moving the ferry stop to the 14th St Pier because of the damage the ferry’s wake is doing to the boats in the marina. They will be physically moving the ticket building from the pier it’s on now to the 14th St pier on the weekend of Aug 23. He said he thought the pier would remain closed until the end of August, at least but would then re-open to public.

Divers are working on the pilings to reinforce them to support the new condos and parking planned to look like Riva Point at 600 Harbor Boulevard in Weehawken.
Kidde pool still on tap in front.
