PATH, credit cards, SmartLink

Meant to post this a while ago, but for the PATH riders that aren’t already aware, you can now conveniently refill your SmartLink card online. (Thanks to Halley Wolowiec for the tip – I rarely ride the train these days…)

Do any of you use the SmartLink Card?

hoboken path smartlink - PATH, credit cards, SmartLink

No more credit cards?

However, one Hoboken411 reader mentioned that the ticket machines no longer accept credit cards… Is that true?

“I’m not sure if you have been told that none of the vending machines at the path station (Hoboken and WTC) are accepting credit cards. Its funny how NJTransit just started a promo to automatically refill the Smartlink card online. Is this coincidence??”

I think he meant the machine replenishment (which takes cash). But there are still cash turnstiles too.

I just tried the online replenishment, and it worked fine, but I noticed that they’ve eliminated the 10-trip option. Now you have to buy at least 20. I like the convenience of fare cards/ez-pass in general, but it bugs me that by buying bundles of trips, we’re allowing them the use of our money until we use the trips. Collectively, this is a huge pool of funds they get to keep on deposit. For someone who doesn’t ride the PATH that frequently, I resent having my “minimum deposit” doubled. In addition, while it’s relatively easy to replenish online, I know there will still be times when I forget to do it, and will now sometimes be forced to pay in cash at the station.

A word of warning to anyone that tried to use credit cards on the machines on Monday and Tuesday. If it said it was processing your card and then gave you a message that it couldn’t perform authorization at this time, then it may have taken your money anyway. That’s what happened with my TransitChek credit card, and I still haven’t gotten the issue resolved. My card now has no money on it, and I have no trips on my SmartLink Card. I had to call the PATH multiple times, fax them my online credit card receipt, and then I had to call TransitChek to refill the card (which will take them 3 days). After all this, the PATH finally admitted that this happened to a lot of people, and they were refunding regular credit cards, but TransitChek cards had to be dealt with by TransitChek. They refused to just put the trips on my SmartLink card. It was all very annoying and discouraging, but the general message is this: Check your credit card statement right away! The PATH may have your money and you may have no trips to show for it.
