Do we all live in a Wiki Quora World?
We touched on the subject recently – regarding the Polymath. The differences between highly knowledgeable people hundreds of years ago versus the “know it alls” of the internet culture – the Wiki Quora World we live in.
Do the “Know-it-alls” know as much as they think they do? Or are they lacking some very important characteristics?
“Ask the cloud…” (i.e., Quora)
Quora is a fascinating site. Some advice is brilliant. But the reliance on it is scary.
So many people “ask questions” of the masses – in hopes to get a good array of answers. And people vote up or vote down those answers.
Like a popularity contest for advice givers.
Some people who give responses are even noteworthy (authors, celebrities, etc.)
But those answers are the same as just looking on Youtube or Google to replace real world experience in leiu of trial and error.
They also try to shape public perception…
One common theme I’ve noticed across the board over the past few years is that, as an “app” or platform like Quora becomes popular and potentially “influential,” it gets INFECTED somehow. Almost guaranteed. Look at the top examples of Google, Apple, Facebook, and Twitter for blatant clues.
Take this recent stupid fucking Quora question recently:
“Why do Hillary Clinton’s events seem to have smaller attendance than Donald Trump’s rallies?”
The honest answer is because THEY DO, and she’s dead meat. A minority of people actually like her. She’d be the worst “elected” leader this country (or any other on this globe) would have ever seen (and that list is HARD as hell to crack into. Look at the people that got rid of the Gold standard or established the Fed for some other bad peeps…)
But the “top” chosen answer on that stupid fucking website began with: “Filling stadiums requires anger. Democrats really aren’t angry…”
The rest of the answer was convoluted in my opinion – but I hope you see my point. Relying on the “cloud” for answers in life is a bad habit to form.
Easy information is addictive and damaging
But what is frustrating to us is that in order to solve a problem or obtain an answer, almost everyone now looks up everything first before even trying on their own.
When people rely on easy information and answers time after time, they become reliant on that crutch to live their lives. With not much to fall back on other than the strength of their memory.
What happens if that knowledge base goes away? You’re left with a large number of people who are inept.
But maybe they get what they deserve? Because it seems not too many people are up in arms over how many jobs have been outsourced overseas as long as they have their iGadget charged and connected.
Those wiki quora people probably don’t mind outsourcing their brains either…
