Empanadas Cafe – Coming soon

Empanadas Cafe – Hoboken, NJ – 123 Washington St.

Trying their luck next at the formerly doomed Crepes & Things spot at 123 Washington St. is Empanadas Cafe.

Empanadas are like Mexican White Castles. They’re tasty for the five seconds it takes to eat one, but are murder on the digestive system for days afterward. At least for us.

And the lovely carb-texture makes it hard (next to impossible) to control yourself. Which is why we don’t eat them anymore.

Empanadas are also cheap. We have “enjoyed” some of the best tasting ones ever over at Ultramarino’s in the past – but Empanadas were only a small portion of what they offered (which is why they’re still in business).

I wonder how many little meat pockets they’ll have to sell in order to make the rent each month? But considering it’s also a “cafe,” they’re probably also selling high-profit margin coffee and other beverages as well.

Time will tell!

Be careful when you order here. Check to make sure you are getting the right thing. I asked for two corn and two spinach empanadas to go because we are vegetarians and those are the only two non-meat options. The woman didn’t seem to speak any English and asked someone else which ones I wanted. The second woman then asked me, “Chicken?” I said no, two corn and two spinach and I even pointed to them to make sure she understood. When I got home and put them in the oven I noticed that there were two spinach and two…beef. If they can’t even get it right when you point to what you want, that’s not a good sign.

The spinach one was delicious though.

Hey let them open their doors try their food before you start asking if the will be able to pay the rent. Give them a fighting chance. Thanks

Calling it Mexican food will offend soon enough. Because Mexican food is only for Mexicans! What are they putting in the cafeteria food these days?
