Reader Mail: Tax dollars blown on toys
I’m sure anyone who spent some time today at the Arts & Music Festival got to see the Hoboken Police showing off their new T3 scooters.
(Thanks Noah, for the pics!)
Here’s a snappy reader mail from Hoboken411 participant “bornandrazedinhobo,” where he expresses discontent with the way the city burns a hole in their virtual money pocket. This time with Horses and Scooters.
The city wastes again!
I was surprised to hear over the weekend that the Hoboken Police Department (backed by Public Safety “Moron” Bill Bergin) had disbanded the PD’s mounted patrol unit in lieu of several new Mobile Segway T3 Scooters. These Scooters are about $10,000 a pop and are going to be used to patrol the waterfront and parks.
According to Bergin, the reasoning behind the mounted units disbandment was based on the belief that the unit was “unable to patrol the entire city”. What is going through the minds of these people? Granted we never needed the horseback patrol anyway which are only used for crowd and riot control and this is not New York City or New Orleans (although many of our cops enjoy N.O. and we do have the same water problem after every rain). It was obvious the only reason HPD got horses was for a publicity stunt and had zero tangible use here! Yet, Bergen claims the horses were unable to patrol the city. How does he figure that? Or is it because the mounted cops were too busy trying to score chicks with the horses than deter crime?
So Bergin decides to scrap one cash vacuum for another, because one hand CAN’T patrol the whole city for another hand that is NOT going to patrol the whole city. SURPRISE, SURPRISE!
What happened to the foot cop? THE TOWN IS ONE SQUARE MILE (411: 1.274, actually) and not one cop is fit enough or even willing to walk the streets on beat as opposed to riding around on a flashy scooter or horse? Are you kidding me? Not to mention the dozen or more new cars the department got only a year or two ago. You actually need a cop on a Segway to patrol a few small parks and tiny waterfront?
What purpose does this solve? IT IS ANOTHER WASTE OF TAX PAYER DOLLARS! It is time to break out the “high-waters”, because the bulls**t is getting too deep in this town!
