Stevens under “Campus Alert”

Updated with picture of burnt door…

4/23/2008 2:40pm Update:

One student told Hoboken411 that it was a door that was set on fire in the dorm. Additionally, it was a “bomb threat” type note which was left, resulting in the searching of all buildings on campus (still ongoing).

The student suspected that this person didn’t have his project ready for the year-end Senior Design competition. Each year, students in each respective field team up and present what they’ve learned. I suppose “How to engineer a calculated disruption of an entire college campus” was not one of the official entries.

4/23/2008 12:30pm:

Apparently some trouble brewing over at Stevens Institute. An arson investigation is underway for a fire last night, and restrictions are in place on the campus. Not sure if this was trouble between students, or something worse.

Stevens Campus Alert

On Tuesday, April 22, 2008, there was a case of arson on the fourth floor of Davis Hall, the Hoboken Fire Department responded and there were no injuries or serious damage. An arson investigation is underway. In addition, a threatening note was found in the fourth floor bathroom on Wednesday, April 23rd at approximately 8:30 a.m.

Effective immediately campus police officers will be posted at the main entry way of Davis Hall and all bags will be checked. The side doors will be closed for entry. Only Davis residents with valid IDs will be permitted in the building.

All members of the campus community are asked to have their Stevens ID available on their person.

Here are some pictures from the campus today, provided by David Pfeffer from “The Stute.”

The yellow makes my eyes hurt…

Bright yellow walls? In a freshman male dorm? What are they thinking?!? No wonder they’re so wound up in there lately.

I think it’s time to bring back the drab Sherwin-Williams “Asylum Grey”

A reward of $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the responsible person or persons is being offered.

I’m also a student at Stevens so to clarify a few things:
Davis is almost all freshmen, men on some floors, women on others; 4th floor (where this happened) is men. Also, an official Stevens email sent out said:

We are now able to provide more information regarding the note left this morning in Davis Hall. The note specified the April 23rd/April 24th overnight period. If there are residents of Davis that are uncomfortable sleeping in their building, Jacobus and Canavan Arena will be open. Please bring your own blankets and pillows.

Jacobus is the Student Center, Canavan, the sports gym.

All of the dorms have card swipe locks on the doors. Normally this allows only the people who live in the dorm into the building, however the system was disabled for the day, so they would only have to watch one door. Also, the external doors can be opened via room keys, but I do not know if anything was done to prevent that.

Also, they no longer have the heat pump project, due to curriculum restructuring. (Though legend would blame the Stevens Park incident.)

i was just there a little while ago, and they werent letting students bring guests up to their dorm rooms, or giving out parking passes to students. kind of annoying but i hope it’s all just a hoax.
