Open Space! {locked}

Why is open space locked in Hoboken?

That’s a good question, isn’t it?

Recently, 4th Ward Councilman Tim Occhipinti asked exactly that – why the “field” (artificial turf) over at “Mama Johnson Field” in the Hoboken Housing Authority (i.e., “projects”) would be “locked?”

Apparently it’s because this field is not meant for “playing,” but rather for “paying” city hall for permits to use it! Way to go, “mayor” don zimmer!

He got a lot of slack from people who essentially said “well if you leave it open, then it will get vandalized!”

Well, who doesn’t see the myriad of problems in this nonsensical debacle? Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

The next time you hear some bobble-head from the current administration talk about the “need” for “open space,” ask them why they kept whatever slivers of land we actually HAD under lock and key! No explanation they give would EVER be acceptable. Not whatsoever.

There was a time when I was young and played basketball at church square park “the courts” and we played usually until maybe 10 PM. Some one in the city hall or parks dept? decided to close the courts and shut off the lights at 9 pm. The first 2/3 nights we removed the lock and turned on the lights and the next time we removed the gate and kept playing. The police took our side and told whoever??, just leave them alone all they want to do is play ball.
So what i’m telling you is get some balls and just remove the fence and pile it over in a corner. Do you think that broad in city hall wants to be known as the mayor who wouldn’t let anybody play. Its not a friggin museum its a ball field and is meant to be played on.
