Massive water main break

3/16/2008 Update:

United Water crews are on the scene fixing the Willow Avenue water main break. Willow between Newark Street and Observer Highway is closed while they rip up the blacktop to repair the pipe that brings precious H2O to Hoboken’s unwashed masses. Water pressure seems to be back to normal. Still no boil water advisory, but you might want to do it anyway just to be safe.

3/16/2008 Update:

Yes, once a month or so, I try to get away from Hoboken411.. what happens each time? Some disaster, such as this Hoboken water main break tonight

Whoa, what a surprise! Water main break!

Hoboken’s used and abused infrastructure continues to cry “Uncle!” A little after 12:30am this morning yet another water main break occurred, this time on Willow Avenue not far from the intersection with Observer Highway. The gushing water from underground quickly flooded Observer Highway from Henderson Street to Park Avenue, Willow Avenue to First Street, the intersection of Park and Observer, and a good portion of Vezzetti Way.

Water was seen gushing up through the ground from a hole in the now buckled sidewalk next to the municipal garage. The gusher was ironically next to the building that used to be the SWAT Team headquarters. Also ironically, flood waters could be seen flowing past two “Office of Emergency Management” SUV’s that haven’t been moved in weeks from where they have been parked on the sidewalk near the intersection of Park and Observer. No actual members of the “Office of Emergency Management” were seen responding to this emergency.

Downtown residents report low water pressure, and several parked cars may end up with flood damage depending on how much higher the water rises before it subsides. Cars parked along Willow between Observer and Newark were in the most jeopardy. One of the cars there is the ubiquitous late ’50’s Ford sedan that seems to have been parked in the same place on the street in front of the Municipal Garage for the last several years.

No word yet if you need to boil your water. Don’t hold your breath for an announcement from City Hall, though the Mayor will probably tell you “Building more high-rise condos will fix everything!”

Looks like we’re not alone. Water mains all across the country are failing, or close to the end of their design limits.

Was there another water main break this morning? I lost water at about 6:20 am. I’m at 14th and Washington. Lots of running water in the street though.

superoogie, i’m gonna need a translation on that one. which shouldn’t be surprising, because, as we know, anyone who supports even one “conservative” principle (whatever that means) is obviously not capable of independent thought.

the only parts i think i deciphered were one, about terrorism around the world and coincidence that there’s none here. i’m not a big coincidence guy. i’m not nice enough to think that these crazy Islamists just decided, eh, never mind, too much effort. two, is about spying and yes, of course i’m comfortable with the government theoretically spying on me. i have nothing to hide.
