Juniors Papaya Grill – Doomed

9/16/2009 Update:

Couldn’t stand the heat of the kitchen?

It appears that Juniors Papaya has made it to the Doomed Hoboken Businesses category. Was it Five Guys that did them in?

See what once was – after the jump (try not to cry).

7/18/2008 Update:

Did you know that Junior’s Papaya now has a breakfast menu on weekends?

Looks pretty good to me, and will have to try it this Sunday.

See MENU PDF HERE.

Has anyone tried it? Any good?

3/11/2008:

Hoboken411 was the “second customer served” yesterday over at Juniors Papaya Grill, Hoboken’s latest restaurant!

We have a winner!

I was so excited and tempted to publish my initial review at lunch yesterday as I was eating the delicious sliders, it was hard to contain myself. But I was able to wait! (No pics of the burgers because I absolutely inhaled them. Fantastic! Especially for a first day order.)

Anyway, Juniors Papaya is our newest “grease pit,” and is well worth trying. Dennis, one of the owners, had told me there was a bit of discussion whether to make the place a little more high-end, or a fast eat & go place like it is now. I think they made the right choice. Burgers, hot dogs, cheese steaks (will be trying them today – they claim the best in Hoboken – Can’t wait!), fries, and other grilled sandwiches. Various fried appetizers, and a custom tossed salad with your choice of toppings (for the health conscious – or closet eater.)

They also have unique fountain drinks, such as Papaya Juice, and Orange Creamsicle (sp?) which I tried… tasted just like one. A bit sweet, but would be refreshing over ice on a hot summer day. See full menu further down.

Did I say I LOVED the sliders yet? Tasty angus beef, on a toasted bun with cheese, sauteed onions and a couple pickles. PERFECT, and just enough (even without fries.) I’m giddy with burger love. I think burgers will replace pizza for me (at least for the next month or two.)

The interior wasn’t complete when I went in, as they still had to pick up the customized artwork from the city. They’re open 7 days a week, and till 3am on Friday’s and Saturday’s. My bet is this will be the #1 late night eatery for a LONG time in Hoboken. Hopefully they can handle the rush.

Overall, great first impressions, friendly staff, and the owner was accommodating and helpful. Welcome to the neighborhood, Juniors!!

I was wondering why they were giving everything away last week. Hopefully something good opens in its place.

Juniors was selling hotdogs for 99 cents for the last few weeks. They’d also give you a free drink and icecream just for walking in.

I feel bad. That they closed.

Yeah, I’m not too sad about this one. I went in there shortly after they opened, got 2 dogs, fries and a papaya and it came to something like $12. For that money I could have gotten on the PATH, gotten off at 9th street, gone to Grey’s and come back. When I asked why the dogs were so expensive the owner started in with, “Do you know what my rent is here?” Yeah, well I didn’t tell you to open a 1,200 square foot hotdog stand.

Here’s hoping it gets replaced with a mid-town diner.

Exactly. I would have easily been a regular here but the day the place opened I took one look at the venue and then their rate card and thought “I’m not paying $3 for a hot dog”. End of story. Not saying a hot dog doesn’t cost $3 to deliver with a profit on Washington Street, I just won’t pay it. 5 Guys isn’t cheap but the come off as really having their act together and the fries are presented in a way you feel like they appreciate the fact a fair amount of money is changing hands.
