Stacks in Hoboken, NJ expands menu with new Smokehouse BBQ

Stacks Smokehouse BBQ Hoboken NJ 506 Washington Street - Stacks Smokehouse BBQThere are a few very good reasons why Hoboken doesn’t really have a true BBQ place: Passion, patience and skill.

You see, any run of the mill line cook (even at the most expensive Hoboken restaurant) can throw a $50 steak on the grill, botch it completely, and simply make another one in 5 minutes.

But when it comes to TRUE BBQ, and especially slow-cooked, smoked BBQ – you really only have one chance a day to get it right.

This is what Stacks Smokehouse BBQ is all about.

New BBQ offering from Stacks in Hoboken

Most of you know Stacks (506 Washington Street) – as Stacks Pancake House & Cafe.

That is still the case, as they’re known for their wide array of pancakes and other breakfast offerings. While they do have burgers, wraps, and salads to satisfy the lunch crowd – Stacks wasn’t always the first to come to mind when it came to dinner in Hoboken. And owner Scott wanted to change that, and to fill (an otherwise lacking) niche in town.

Is Stacks Smokehouse BBQ any good?

Scott is actually quite passionate about cooking, and bought himself a commercial BBQ smoker and learned the ropes of slow-smoked meats. At his own home, in fact – before introducing the new Stacks Smokehouse BBQ menu here (menu).

Now Hobokenites have a tasty new dinner option. Tender fall off the bone baby back ribs. Juicy, flavorful pulled pork sandwiches. Home made cole slaw. Melt in your mouth brisket, and more. While the menu is sort of short at the moment, they will be adding new choices as the evolve.

Our barometer for whether a “BBQ” dish is prepared is the baby back ribs. No sauce, just the rub. And man, I can tell you that this just fell off the bone, and had a nice, deep smoked flavor. Just the right amount of “meat to fat” ratio. A (hungry) full grown man can easily finish a whole rack, or a table of two (with appetizers).

It’s nice to know that you can get genuine “down south” BBQ taste without having to leave Hoboken – and meat that is actually freshly cooked in Hoboken, not schlepped in from another city. In a car. Stuck in traffic.

But definitely start out with the ribs if you want to see for yourself. Delicious!

Their menu is quite expensive with a pull pork sandwich for $16, half a chicken for $16, brisket platter for $22, and a full rack for $28.

We’ve had the ribs here and loved them. Great BBQ is not a $5 foot long at Subway, more of a food investment for your taste buds. $30 for a full rack with one side is not something I can afford to do daily, but at least once monthly.
