Fatal 5 car wreck on Viaduct
A Hoboken Ambulance Corp member notified Hoboken411 to say that cops seemed to be taking action on the troublesome viaduct. It’s good to know the city is doing something to make this speed ramp safer. I still highly recommend rumble strips. ASAP!
“I was on duty at the Ambulance Corps and heard on the radio a cop car pulling cars over two at a time on the viaduct between about 4 and 6pm. I think he was parked at or near the bottom of it, but we didn’t drive over there, so I can’t be sure.
As I enjoy the occasional workout walk to Union City and don’t want the same fate as that guy sitting at the red light there that weekend, I was cheering the cop on!”
Woman erroneously reported as dead
A victim who was reported as dead yesterday is still alive, but in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Hackensack University Medical Center.
The third person, who was the wife of one of the victims killed in Saturday’s crash, had been reported to have perished in the crash by Hoboken Public Safety Director Bill Bergin. He said he got this information from police reports, but offered no apologies for reporting the inaccurate news.
Hoboken University Medical Center Spokeswoman Joan Quigley said that the woman worked at the hospital for the past 30 years as a registered nurse.
At the current time, no information was being made available by Hackensack University Medical Center.
My apologies for the original incorrect report, and hope she makes a full recovery.
1/20/2008 Update 2:
A reader informed Hoboken411 that the woman who perished in yesterday’s accident was the wife of Domenic Lucivero, who runs the Hoboken Adult Soccer League (HASL) in town. They said that “Domenic is a special man, and we wish him the best through this terrible time.”
Our condolences to families of the victims.
With two people killed, and many others injured, I’m curious if now may be a good time to implement some kind of speeding deterrent?
While speed bumps would probably make things worse (i.e., cars vaulting in the air and off the viaduct completely), rumble strips may be the answer. Either similar to what was recently installed in various parts of Hoboken, or perhaps what’s near the toll plazas and shoulders on the NJ Turnpike and Garden State Parkway.
I can’t think of a better solution. Can you?
1/19/2008 11:15pm Update:
Two dead, one in critical condition
Bad news from this terrible and tragic accident. In addition to the first victim that died shortly after the crash, a second person has died several hours later. A third person who was very badly injured is currently struggling for life.
It’s been said that the 36-year old woman who lost her life, apparently caused the accident by hitting the car ahead of her when traveling 60mph down the viaduct. The couple she struck was severely injured, killing the man while the wife is presently hanging on to life at Jersey City Medical Center.
An additional 8 other individuals were injured.
Names have not been released yet.
Bad wreck on viaduct
A serious five car accident on the 14th Street Viaduct occurred within the past 30 minutes. Some injuries seemed serious, and medical assistance was called in from Union City and Jersey City. One man was being carted off while a medical tech was pressing on his chest (as if his heart had stopped.)
From the sound of what’s taking place on the live scanner now, it appears this may have been fatal, and the NJ State Police may be called in.
Hope everyone is alright, but I do wonder how accidents like this take place on a perfectly straight road.
