    Reader Mail: Local Wedding Advice?

    09

    June

    6/9/2008:

Today, we have a Hoboken411 reader who’s getting married in Jersey City in a few months, and wonders if any of you could share some tips about good local wedding services companies.

    hoboken-local-wedding-companies.jpg

“I am getting married up here this fall, and I need some help. I was hoping that some of your readers were also married in the area and might be able to provide some suggestions. Here’s what I’m looking for:

    • A limo company that is reliable and not over priced.
    • Someone for hair and makeup on the wedding day. I would rather have someone come to the Hyatt Hotel the day of the wedding (even if it was just for make-up).
    • A good place for tuxedos.
    • Quality wedding invitations.

I already have a photographer and a florist.

Any reliable recommendations would be appreciated! Thank you!!!”

    So what do you say?

    Drug use at Hoboken parks

    09

    June

    6/9/2008:

I’m sure many of you have seen the plethora of discarded drug bags all over the city.

Last week, I went down to Pier A park to get an afternoon of fishing in (instead of covering the Mile-Square Film-Festival… smart choice, right?) There were countless little “dime bags” such as this spewn throughout the parks pathways (along with beer bottle-caps too). Not sure if it was marijuana, or something much worse, like cocaine or crack.

Despite the Hoboken Police-force performing routine “detail checks” of each city park multiple times per day (they drive through in their air-conditioned, ozone-depleting squad cars), illegal public consumption of drugs and alcohol still seems to be rampant. “Mommy, what are all those bags on the sidewalk?”

    What is this, Irvington?

[Note: This is a Hoboken411 reader contributed article. Reader “Electric Eye” isn’t working this week, and will be submitting one or more “vacation articles” each day! Thanks!]

    Hoboken contributes - negatively!

Today I stumbled upon this nice little picture of all the states projected budget gaps. I couldn’t help but think of our small little town and it’s financial problems. Good going Hoboken, nice to see we are doing our part to make our little state just a little darker shade of red!

  • Used Car Warranties

    09

    June

    6/9/2008:

I already know that Hoboken isn’t really the best place for a car, but many of us need or want them for one reason or another.

There are always tons of new cars floating around town, which you’d presume all still have factory warranties.

What about those that own used cars?

Many pre-owned vehicles (depending on the age/mileage) come “certified” from the dealer. Usually, it’s a 2 year/24,000 mile warranty, and covers most breakdowns other than wear & tear. But what do you do when that warranty expires, and still wish to keep it? Are any of you in the same situation?

    hoboken-used-car-warranty.jpg

    What choice should you make?

You have a few options if you intend on keeping your car post-factory warranty:

    1. Get the car re-certified by a qualified dealer.
While this may be the safest all-around method for ensuring ongoing operation of your transportation, it’s also the most costly. To re-certify a car after warranty requires two steps. First, the car has to be “brought up to spec.” Meaning all components have to be certified in working order. This can cost several thousand dollars, depending on the make/model. Then, you need to renew the warranty. The total cost can easily exceed $5,000-$6,000 or more. Not an easy pill to swallow for many drivers.
    2. Buy a third-party warranty.
This method appears to be the most-cost effective, but not without major caveats. For starters, the “used-car warranty” market is flooded with what seem to be fly-by-night operations. They may be located out-of-state and far away, and you have no real way to ensure they’ll still be in business down the road. Additionally, you’ll have to carefully read the contracts, see what obligations you’re under (such as keeping up with scheduled maintenance - which can render your contract void if you cannot prove you have), and what parts or components are/are not covered. Finding quality advice about which third-party warranty companies are reputable almost seems impossible (online, at least.)
    3. Replace the car with one in warranty.
Probably the most sensible of the bunch, but may be out of reach financially for some.
    4. No warranty.
This may be the riskiest choice of all. While you have no real out-of-pocket expense in the beginning, but if you ever need a major repair, you’d be up the creek. Some of the fancier cars out there (BMW, Mercedez, Audi) have some sophisticated electronic components that can easily set you back a large chunk of cash. But if you get lucky, you’ll end up further ahead. Do you take the risk?

But what if you’re leaning towards choice….

    Number 2: Third Party Warranties?

Has anyone purchased one of these?

There are so many choices out there! To obtain a similar warranty to what originally came with your car, the costs range from $2300 to over $3500 (minimum 2/24).

But the options are mind-boggling, and unless you know someone who’s had a real-life experience with one of them, a very risky investment to make. But if there is a decent used-car warranty company to be had, it certainly is a safer choice than rolling the dice hoping you won’t need a costly repair in the future.

What, if any, are your experiences with Used-Car Warranties? Which company did you use? Which should be avoided at all costs?

    Thanks!

  • Mayor Roberts: Possible Replacement?

    09

    June

    6/9/2008:

One Hoboken411 reader thought that this 19-year old freshman from Oklahoma would make a great replacement for Mayor David Roberts.

He’s a self-admitted video “gamer” and seems to have no baggage or affiliations. Can we call him up and get him over here for next year’s election?

    Oklahoma freshman named town’s mayor

mayor-john-tyler-hammons-oklahoma.jpgLike any red-blooded American teenager, John Tyler Hammons digs rock music, fast cars, video games and…fiscal planning?

Apparently so. The University of Oklahoma freshman trounced 70 year-old Hershel McBride to become the mayor of Muskogee, Oklahoma, making it the first city in the nation to be governed by a self-admitted gamer.

But while he could own any of his peers at Halo 3, the fresh-faced leader is turning his sights on cleaning up the town’s politics by establishing an independent ethics commission and locking down campaign finance reporting.

“I’m sure the (city) council will work with me on these issues,” he said. “I campaigned on this, and this is something I intend to push.”

Tired of the same old political shenanigans, the townsfolk are backing their new man.

“He doesn’t have the baggage. He doesn’t owe anybody anything,” said cafe owner Gary Armstrong. “It’s sort of a fresh start for Muskogee.”

Best known as the subject of country legend Merle Haggard’s 1969 hit “Okie from Muskogee,” the unassuming city of 38,000 is considered the archetype of virtuous, small town America, a “place where even squares can have a ball.”

    And now, so can gamers.

    6/9/2008:

This morning, a Hoboken411 reader sent in this sweet employment contract for our School Business Administrator, courtesy of you, the Hoboken tax-payer.

One reason behind the bloated budget

    “Hi, 411:

Thought I’d pass along a copy of the school business administrator’s contract, which is up for renewal at Tuesday’s school board meeting. Brian Buckley now gets $145,000 and no doubt they’ll vote him a 5% raise. He also gets seven days off for a death in the family, including aunts and uncles, and 15 sick days. I guess that’s standard throughout the district. There’s also an assistant school business administrator. No wonder it’s costing us $25,000 per student!”

  • Hoboken Week in Review - 6/8/2008

    08

    June

    6/8/2008:

Summer arrived early this year, much to my dissatisfaction. Four straight 90-degree days are predicted! Luckily it appears it’ll return to the low 80’s for the 10 days after. Whew!

Yet another whimsical week in “Carnival Hoboken.” Politics as cut-throat as ever, city employees under the gun, and trouble with the city coffers. What’s a guy like me to do? Take a vacation? Nah, that’d be nutty.

Here’s your perfectly seasoned weekly snapshot of the spicy topics in and around the mile square.

Taking a week off from work? Have much to say about Hoboken? Want it published on the most-read site? Check this post out to find out what I’m looking for! Hey, it certainly will be fun!

    hoboken411-week-in-review-richard-england-resigns.jpg

Here are the Top 10 new, bumped or re-treaded postings this week that had the most diverse and hottest overall discussion in Hoboken!

    Hottest topics of the week

    1. LaBruno still swatting around
SWAT Investigation report “leaked” (like everything else in this town). It confirms pretty much what we all presumed. Yawn. Next hot Hoboken Christmas item: MadLibs: Swat & Police edition. Fill in the slurs, the whatchamacallits, and (insert attitude here).
    2. Shiniest shovels on the east coast
The “dignitaries” lined up and chatted about the Clearview Cinemas theater that will be “coming soon.”
    3. Merry Meeting-go-round
Hoboken should see a surge of back-operations as residents are subject to a myriad of marathon council meetings in what may be the most uncomfortable room on earth.
    4. The fixed race is over
Hudson County Freeholder Primary was last week. Two of the candidates suspect foul play with the outcome.
    5. Abusing privileges?
One resident was miffed out of control because one handicapped driver received exclusive “courtesies” from city hall honchos.
    6. The Empire scales back
The hits keep coming for one local health club. Horrific allegations, reports of poor management, all to be seen on a consumer advocacy website.
    7. Who’s sicker? The patients, or the hospital itself?
Boy, our HUMC hospital smells more like a fish-market on days like this.
    8. Quiet no more
Previously mediocre watering hole gets some critical life injections as it transforms into “Northern Soul.”
    9. Top 5: Rants about Hoboken
Off the top of my head, I spewed out five things about Hoboken that irked me at the moment. Many more readers added their own.
    10. Leagle Beagle is not making friends
The furry legal columnist on Hoboken411 isn’t “pleasing them all” by any means, however still has a mini fan-club.

    Noteworthy

    This week

Other than (yet another) special council meeting, this is about all I could suggest:

    June

    6/7/2008:

For those not interested in the Big Apple BBQ over in NYC, but are still bored today, here’s another Saturday and Sunday option “outside of Hoboken.” Considering ain’t much noteworthy happening around our neck of the woods, I “borrowed” this post from the Daily Newarker (and provided appropriate trackbacks.)

Several Hoboken411 readers mentioned that this is one incredible Festival, with fireworks (at 11:30 tonight), fun, music and great food.

Plus, our hometown “buddy,” Governor Jon Corzine will be there tomorrow as well!

    Portugal Day Festival

newark-portugal-day-june-7-2008.jpgIt’s true, despite rumors to the contrary, the Portugal Day Festival and Parade _will_ take place on the weekend of June 7th — mark your calendars. This is one of the biggest cultural festivals in the state, drawing a half-a-million people to Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood for music, food, drinks and great times.

New to the festival? Don’t worry: we’ve put together a survival guide for you below and some directions to help you find it. All roads (and planes and rails) lead to Newark in this state, so you’ve got plenty of options on how to get here — but, really, the train is your best bet.
