Pumpkins used for comical purposes

This photo wasn’t taken in Hoboken – but has to be the best Halloween display ever! Pretty much typifies a usual weekend in the Mile Square! Have you seen anything like this around town?

Also, in the spirit of “vomit,” this photo parody mirrors what many Hoboken residents are feeling about the way our city is being run. Phony campaign promises, corruption, and an ongoing shell game makes many folks around here want to hurl their own pumpkin seeds:

    “Dear Hoboken411,

In honor of National Feral Cat Day that is recognized today, October 16 (and in light of the recent 411 report about the conditions of the Newark animal shelter) , we are trying to raise awareness of the feral cat crisis that exists in Hoboken. Companion Animal Trust is a non profit that supports Trap-Neuter-Return and has TNR’ed numerous cat colonies already in the city.

Litters of kittens are born every day in backyards, behind restaurants and empty lots. Cats dart across streets, scurry into alleys and hide under cars. Sadly, many suffer and die under the worst conditions.

We are hosting an event to raise money for and awareness of the feral cat crisis on October 22, 2009 at Louise and Jerry’s in Hoboken (2 hours open bar). I have attached a flyer to this email outlining the details. Additionally, I have provided information below on the importance of Trap-Neuter-Return! Please consider posting this information on Hoboken411 to help us spread the word about the importance of addressing this issue.

    10/31/2009:

    (No, not a Halloween parody…)

Zimmer cuts ribbon while HUMC burns through cash

For three years, Hoboken411 readers lambasted former Hoboken Mayor David Roberts for cutting ribbon after ribbon – while Hoboken got deeper and deeper into scandal and debt. Roberts was mocked for running around town with scissors and having city employees put up his ribbon cutting pictures on the city website. Guess what’s changed under Acting Mayor Dawn Zimmer?

    Nothing.

    zimmer-cuts-ribbon-at-humc

As Acting Mayor, Zimmer is also automatically a member of the Hoboken Municipal Hospital Authority Board. When news broke about the audit that showed a surprise $22 million dollar loss at Hoboken University Medical Center, did Zimmer attend the HMHA board meeting this week to grill hospital officials about what was going on? Was she there to hear the hospital CFO was “relieved of his duties?” No, but she did find time Thursday afternoon to cut a ribbon for HUMC’s expanded Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine.

Roberts also cut ribbons while avoiding meetings

Dave Roberts also ducked HMHA meetings as Mayor but never missed a ribbon cutting at the Hospital. Still, even Roberts didn’t appoint a former Hospital CEO who resigned in a sea of red ink to the HMHA board. Zimmer’s secret midnight appointment of Jonathan Metsch has a lot of tongues wagging. Funny how Metsch also just happens to appear in Zimmer’s last mailer endorsing her.

Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine gets upgraded

Best of luck to the Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine on their new 4D ultrasound machines, which provide much clearer pictures than traditional ultrasounds. With so many mothers and mothers-to-be in this town it only makes sense for HUMC to step up its game in the maternity department. Not all the news is bad, and there are many good Doctors, Nurses and employees working hard to serve the community at HUMC. Whether the very highly paid upper management has what it takes to make the hospital break even is another story.

    Dark Horse Candidate?

It looks like Artie Lange isn’t the only person running a write-in campaign for Mayor of Hoboken. Former councilman and current Dave Roberts-appointed Zoning Board member Tony Soares is featured on campaign fliers found through town this morning. The last two times Tony ran for public office he lost by a huge margin.

Could a write-in campaign make the third time a charm?

    10/30/2009 UPDATE:

More details about lost $4 million grant

During one of his last City Council meetings back in June, State Assemblyman Ruben Ramos put the council on notice that he was working with Congressman Albio Sires, State and Hudson County officials to get millions of dollars of federal stimulus funds to alleviate Hoboken’s flooding problem. Ramos said the North Hudson Sewerage Authority’s flood pump plan was a “shovel ready project” ripe to gain stimulus money. He wanted the council – and whomever was going to be elected Mayor – aware that the City would be contacted soon to apply for the grant funds. Apparently Dawn Zimmer was not paying close enough attention, because as Acting Mayor she missed the opportunity to secure $4 million in stimulus funds. In this video from the October 21st council meeting Zimmer is asked about how Hoboken lost the money:

The four million dollars would have gone a long way to paying for the second flood pump that NHSA and it’s engineers at CH2M Hill say is needed to fix the flooding caused by high-tide storms. Zimmer’s public relations team claims the city wouldn’t have been able to find the additional $2 million needed to secure the grant, but that excuse falls apart when you see at the very same meeting the State Fiscal Monitor allowed the city to borrow over $4 million to secure grants to help pay for the cleanup of the long-delayed park at 1600 Park Ave.

People outraged by the loss of the $4 million grant say “Zimmer dropped the ball.”

Ironically, this Kim Glatt flier was on my car today:
