Reader Mail: Soccer Field Mess

9/30/2009 Update:

Website changed

In what I can only assume is a response to yesterday’s Hoboken411 article, the website of the Hoboken Youth Soccer League has removed it’s “sincere thanks” to Dawn Zimmer and Leo Pellegrini. Apparently there’s more than one “Disgusted Soccer Mom” out there unhappy with this situation, and the attempts by some at City Hall to take political advantage of it.

The website has been changed to say:

Hoboken Photo of the Day – 9/30/2009

Sometimes I notice random things that I feel are absolutely cute. Like this tiny hand-written sign posted on a telephone pole uptown. It seems some kid that attends St. Francis Academy in Union City was so proud to be selling chocolate bars for the school – that they “advertised” it on the pole. First thought I had was “this kid has a future in marketing!”

PS – if you have images collecting dust on your camera or hard drive – send them in for eventual inclusion on Hoboken411! Please state how you’d like to be credited in your email, and a description – if desired!!

    9/30/2009 Update:

With a month left before Halloween 2009 – Hoboken’s largest costume store ever opened up recently!

Ricky’s set to spook the Mile Square

Ricky’s Halloween Costume Superstore opened up a pop-up store at the old Washington Mutual bank branch at 222 Washington St.

Take a look at the photo gallery below. They sure crammed a lot of stuff into this space. Personally, I found most of the costumes to be “cheap,” but some premium, more costly costumes could be found. They’ll be gone shortly after the holiday – and a for lease sign will take it’s place once again.

    9/30/2009:

Yesterday, we found out about a reader who got screwed using one of those new payphones when his cell phone died, getting hosed for close to 60 bucks for a few local calls!

Well, I’m here to tell you about a way to prevent that from happening!

    Duracell Instant Chargers

duracell-instant-charger-new-packagingMany phones these days charge via USB port to your computer or power adapter. While buying spare batteries for your devices might be a good idea at times, you can never be sure that battery sizes remain consistent as you upgrade/replace your models.

Bring in the Duracell Instant Chargers.

I picked up the latest in the line of portable USB chargers from Duracell recently – and it’s a perfect solution for “power on the go.” The Instant Charger allows you to instantly charge any USB-compatible device, such as your cell phone, iPhone, iPod, or BlackBerry. And, the Duracell Instant Charger conveniently charges through your laptop or computer’s USB port. It also fits any miniUSB powered device as well.

Get many extra hours of talk time on your phone – and up to 50 hours extra music playback!

Cost is about $25 from Amazon.com (and is usually cheaper than a spare battery for your phone.)

    duracell-instant-charger-application-use

duracell-instant-charger-other-modelsYou can also get the previous model charger – which is just slightly less powerful, but equally useful for about $19. The demand for the new model is quite strong at the moment.

They also make super-deluxe models that are even stronger ($40) – and can even charge more than one device at a time. Great for absent minded love-birds that constantly have dying phones, or if you want to charge your mp3 player and phone simultaneously.

Lastly – a “micro sized” model is also available – with less power than all of them, but in the most compact of sizes. “For the discriminating geek.”

Overall – a great way to never be caught without power – and avoid getting scammed by crooked payphone operators!

    More taste, less filling

Well, Wednesday morning’s Breakfast Nuggets are all political tater tots infused with more Mayoral flavor to keep you informed, without all the clutter!

    Glatt Gets Going

mike-novak-hoboken-nj-supporting-kimberly-glattFormer Municipal Judge Kimberly Glatt is lining up support from former boosters of Peter Cammarano.

Ex-Cammarano council slate member Mike Novak is hosting a private “Meet Kim Glatt” event at his office Saturday morning.

Word on the street is Glatt’s Mayoral ambitions are also supported by former Freeholder Maurice Fitzgibbons and ex-Mayor David Roberts.

Also heard that State Senator Brian Stack’s ex-wife Katia is running Glatt’s campaign, though she hasn’t been in contact yet.

    Mason Makes Moves

beth-mason-honored-with-award-by-nj-fogBeth Mason has a press conference planned for this afternoon to “introduce several key members of her campaign team.”

Mason was also honored last week for her dedication to the cause of government transparency by the New Jersey Foundation for Open Government:

“Mason, a noted open government advocate, was presented with a plaque during the meeting in recognition of her pioneering role as a statewide leader in the battle for open government… “Beth Mason took on the leadership of the NJFOG at a critical time in our history. The organization played a key role in passing the Open Public Records Act (OPRA) in 2002, but getting it enforced and changing New Jersey’s closed door political culture was turning out to be an even greater challenge,” said Baehr, a former reporter for the Star-Ledger and journalism professor at Rutgers.”

    Brinkman’s Brand C

Quick! Name a political party with even fewer Hoboken members than the Republicans. Nathan Brinkman was given the endorsement of the state Conservative Party for his run for Hoboken Mayor yesterday. From NJCP Party Chairman Stephen Spinosa’s press release:

“Having known Nathan for about a year through our mutual involvement with the Lonegan gubernatorial campaign, I have found Nathan to be a solid individual with excellent organizational & leadership skills. I believe that the solvency, security & prosperity of the citizens of Hoboken can BEST be served by electing Nathan Brinkman as Mayor in November 2009.”

Spinosa also said Brinkman would “transform Hoboken once more into a shining city on a hill.” Could he have used a Ronald Reagan reference that wasn’t so geographically inaccurate? We also hear Brinkman’s campaign is phone polling Hoboken voters to see if they would vote for a “Conservative Republican.”

Speaking of President Reagan, did you know he visited the 1984 St. Ann’s Feast on a campaign swing through Hoboken with Frank Sinatra? They landed in a helicopter on the Stevens campus. True story!

    POG Meeting Tonight

Hoboken’s People for Open Government will hold its annual reorganization meeting at tonight at the home of Helen Hirsch – 98 Park, Apt 4P. President Eric Kurta says doors open at 6pm for those who wish to engage in pre-meeting chit-chat (see agenda):

“As we do every September, we will collect $25 for annual membership. Members in good standing for more than three months can be nominated for board membership. Board nominations are voted on by the general membership. The new board will then select its executive committee for the coming year (President, VP, Treasurer, Secretary).”

That’s it for now – all of today’s political updates in one easy-to-swallow pill post!

    9/29/2009 Update:

An update to a Hoboken quality of life story from this past summer…

    Garbage now more contained

One resident was particularly upset with an unsightly garbage staging area outside The Sovereign Building uptown back in June. However, some improvements have been made to this spot to hide the unattractive pile of refuse until it finds a permanent home. Hey – you can’t knock that they at least tried!

    UPDATE:

“Thanks again for posting so quickly. It turns out that an incredibly decent guy, Al Stone, who works for Hudson County Parks and Recreation found the wallet during the course of his duties, and called my wife when he got home from work!”

    9/29/2009:

If you find – please return!

A Hoboken411 reader emailed me shortly ago saying his wife lost a black wallet/purse type thing somewhere between Shoprite and Columbus Park. If you find it, please email hoboken411@gmail.com. A reward will be given, along with redemption from the man above.
