Do you own, operate or park a vehicle with commercial plates in Hoboken? If so – I’d suggest you find somewhere else to park it tonight!
Even though dozens of commercial vehicles can be seen parked on Hoboken’s streets overnight on any given day of the week – it’s technically illegal to park them between the hours of 8pm and 8am (ordinance 190-5).
In an effort to drum up revenue – Hoboken Police have been instructed to issue summonses to ALL commercial vehicles parked on our streets tonight.
I stumbled across some photos in my archives that I haven’t seen in a while – of what the current Maxwell Place residential/retail neighborhood looked like just a few years ago.
Sure is nice to be able to use that prime waterfront space now, isn’t it?
Hoboken411 reader Matt mentioned that popping up in the past few days is a new sexy shop called “Purple Diamondz” at 14th and Bloomfield.
As you know, this puny corner retail spot here is like a retail graveyard. With My Urban Auctioneer, Santa Fe Touch, Life, Good Breed all “come and gone” – here we have the next attempt at a successful Hoboken business.
Bermuda Triangle of Hoboken Retail
Reminds you of the the opening monologue from Seinfeld Episode #307 (“The Cafe”):
“There’s always that one location, one store location that’s constantly changing hands. Everybody has this in their neighborhood, it’s a leather store, it’s a yogurt shop, it’s a pet supply. It’s constantly changing and nobody can do business there. It’s like some sort of Bermuda triangle of retail, you know? Stores open up and then they just disappear without a trace. Nobody knows what happened to ‘em. I guess eventually when like aliens land in mother ship of close encounters, bottom will slowly open and all these store owners will come wondering out in a daze going ‘I thought there would be more walk-in traffic didn’t you?”

Local artist Justin Rivenbark began displaying his art at Maxwell’s (11th and Washington) this weekend – and is having an opening reception tonight at 7pm. The exhibit will run until October 1st.
Swing by to meet the artist and check out his work. You can learn more about the “Rootist Movement” on his website. Interesting!
Today’s question of the day comes from Hoboken411 reader Vinny who says:
“The acting Mayor is asking for resumes for a bunch of job openings at town hall, calling it an “open process to create the strongest team possible.” However, what are Dawn Zimmer’s qualifications? Let’s see HER resume! From what I understand, other than being a rookie councilperson who has accomplished nothing so far, she was just a mom who took pictures with a camera!
In November, I’d like to see the resumes for all candidates side by side, and we’ll see who has the strongest skill set and experience to lead Hoboken!”
QotD:If the city demands qualified applicants for jobs at city hall – should the Mayor and other elected officials be held to the same process?
Oh, an if you’re interested which jobs the city is accepting resumes for, continue reading…
[If you have a question you'd like to get public opinion on - feel free to send an email to Hoboken411. Subject must start with QotD - and follow the same format: Opening statement - then Question.]
Despite many new Hoboken shops and restaurants opening up – seems like retail fatalities are still happening. Shoeuphoria apparently closed up shop this weekend.

Smoother ride coming in some areas
We all know some roads in Hoboken can damage cars as well as internal organs.
With water mains breaking, construction sites abound, and general lack of maintenance – it’s refreshing to know at least some street will receive a “face lift” this year.
Is your street on the list? Is there a particular road that’s blatantly missing?
Roads slated to be resurfaced in 2009
14th Street – Willow to Hudson
15th Street – Park to Willow
16th Street – Part to Willow
Garden Street – all but Newark to 4th (done last year)
Hudson Place – between Texas Arizona and Hobsons
Hudson Street – 14th down to Observer
Newark Street – all but Willow to Hudson
Park Avenue – 11th down to Observer
Once the weather warms up – expect lots of trucks and paving equipment to brighten your day!
