Hoboken411 reader Dorothy wants everyone to know about a new book club that has started up in Hoboken called (ironically): “Hoboken Reads.”
A fine new bookclub had its first meeting last month! Hoboken ReadsB is under the professional guidance of Jill WehlerB and will meet once a month in the South Independence. Next meeting: July 14, 2009 and we will be discussing Unaccustomed Earth by Lahiri. Join in – this is a good one! Contact Jill at hobokenreads@gmail.com.

Review capsule from Booklist:
“Following her thoughtful first novel, The Namesake (2003), which has been made into a meditative film, Lahiri returns to the short story, the form that earned her the Pulitzer Prize for her debut, Interpreter of Maladies (1999).
The tight arc of a story is perfect for Lahiri’s keen sense of life’s abrupt and painful changes, and her avid eye for telling details. This collection’s five powerful stories and haunting triptych of tales about the fates of two Bengali families in America map the perplexing hidden forces that pull families asunder and undermine marriages. “Unaccustomed Earth,” the title story, dramatizes the divide between immigrant parents and their American-raised children, and is the first of several scathing inquiries into the lack of deep-down understanding and trust in a marriage between a Bengali and non-Bengali. An inspired miniaturist, Lahiri creates a lexicon of loaded images. A hole burned in a dressy skirt suggests vulnerability and the need to accept imperfection. Van Eyck’s famous painting, The Arnolfini Marriage, is a template for a tale contrasting marital expectations with the reality of familial relationships. A collapsed balloon is emblematic of failure. A lost bangle is shorthand for disaster.
Lahiri’s emotionally and culturally astute short stories (ideal for people with limited time for pleasure reading and a hunger for serious literature) are surprising, aesthetically marvelous, and shaped by a sure and provocative sense of inevitability.”I

A week or two ago – I ended up at the Bergen Town Center in Paramus, NJ (the old “Bergen Mall” site).

They’ve done quite a bit of renovation, and it’s turning into quite a popular spot for suburban residents. The mall has a Century 21 (which is why I went there) – as well as a Target (brand new – with some futuristic shopping carts!)
One place that interested me – despite some pretty bad-to-mediocre reviews – Bobby’s Burger Palace (a la Bobby Flay’s) – is insanely popular – with lines out the door each day of the week. (SEE MENU)
I’m always for local small-businesses in Hoboken – however, I was thinking – with the exorbitant rents over at Maxwell Place, this business might be a pretty good fit. Haven’t tried the food there yet (burgers are one of my staples – but waiting on line isn’t). Plus, with the WindMill burger & hot dog joint coming to town – have we met our hamburger quota?
Has anyone tried BBP yet? Any good? Would it succeed in Hoboken?

Hoboken411 reader “Chief” sent in a couple photos of the waterfront area in Hoboken – I decided to combine them and make ‘em black & white…
[Stay tuned for tomorrow's Readerpix entry! - Note: one reader's photo(s) will be featured each day at approximately 11am. Unless your photo is time-sensitive - it will be published in the order it was received! Additional note: Your pictures will have a better chance of being published if they're in "landscape" mode, as opposed to the taller "portrait" modes... ]

[Every month, Hoboken411 will be posting a column to give answers to Hobokenites’ most frequently asked health questions. The column is written by Dr. Laura Brayton of Hoboken Chiropractic + Wellness. Please send all health-related questions to DrBrayton@HobokenChiro.com.]

“Dear Dr. Brayton,
I have been experiencing pretty intense fatigue and insomnia over the past several weeks which has been making it extremely difficult to function at my job. I barely have the energy to get out of bed in the morning and need to drink several cups of coffee to wake up and get through my work load.
Most nights when I get home from work, I just go home and “crash” instead of meeting up with friends. I haven’t had the energy to go to the gym and overall just don’t feel like myself. I need help!
Sincerely,
K.D.“
Dear K.D.,
Living in the crazy, hectic environment of the NYC area definitely adds undue stress to the hormonal balance of the body.
There is a mind-body connection, well described in Candace Pert, Ph. D.’s book, “Molecules of Emotion,” that discusses how our thoughts actually cause biochemical changes within the brain. By affecting the neurotransmitter levels, like serotonin, dopamine, the body directly responds either positively or negatively dependent on these levels. They not only affect mood but also relaxation which is necessary for quality sleep. In addition, if the adrenal glands are being overstimulated (from stress and caffeine) to produce adrenaline and other hormones during “fight or flight,” they tend to wear out. That begins a downward cycle of imbalances amongst all of the other hormones in your body, including thyroid, cortisol, insulin, estrogen. To break the cycle, it is important to regain balance in the chemical aspect (neurotransmitters and hormones).
These levels are best tested through saliva and urine as blood hormone levels do not show the fluctuation that occurs throughout the day. After further testing, specific supplements can be prescribed to help address the chemical imbalance while the patient is doing a thorough yet safe detox to cleanse to rid the body of toxic materials, including heavy metals, yeast, parasites, etc.
Yours in health,
Dr. Brayton

[Continuing the ORIGINAL Hoboken411 "Photo of the Day" series...]
This property at 12th and Garden – has been on the market for over a year (including an “auction” in May 2008).
The “For Sale” sign has humbly been changed to a “For Rent” sign.
When will the market finally bottom out?

PS – if you have images collecting dust on your camera or hard drive – send them in for eventual inclusion on Hoboken411! Please state how you’d like to be credited in your email, and a description – if desired!!

Hoboken411 reader Gary doesn’t want to be reminded of this year’s Hoboken Municipal Elections anymore:

“I’d be willing to bet that we’ve all had more than enough of this past election season, would like to move on & that the time has come to take down all political posters around town. Two images are attached showing a Cammarano poster that was put up on the cell tower screen of a building on Hudson street. This would certainly qualify as an unconditional use of a cell tower screen, which is supposed to blend in & hide the ugly cell phone antennas, so why is the mayor elect permitting this inappropriate use? Take this and all of the freaking posters down!”
At the same time – while Dawn Zimmer’s team doesn’t have giant banners around town (except at her campaign headquarters) – there are still many more “subtle” reminders of the election. Including stickers on poles, and the dozens of postcards just deteriorating away on the sidewalks and in our parks. Litter bugs!
