Happy New Year (again)

December

12/31/2008:

Due to my ADHD – I screwed up my database today pretty bad – all stories and comments made today were lost. I had to restore the last backup made this morning.

For the 27 people that registered today – you’ll have to register again – sorry about that!!

But I can at least say “Happy New Year” to all of you one more time!

There’s no doubt that gyms in Hoboken (and probably everywhere else) – seem to be involved with the most mud-slinging around! (Along with local politics – and hair salons!)

One Hoboken411 reader sent this message to SkyClub Fitness (and copied 411)… sigh.

    hoboken-sky-club-fitness-complaint.jpg

    Management Complaint Box

    “Dear Sky Club Fitness Center:

The purpose of my email is to alert you of some rude and obnoxious remarks your sales manager made during his sales pitch to me today. When learning about the different packages and fees, he felt it was appropriate to tell me that if I curbed my other spending such as bars, drinks and Louis Vuitton bags then Sky Club would seem more affordable. Then when I told him I had to discuss the fees with my fiance, he said “If your fiance has an issue with you bettering your health then maybe your marrying the wrong person.”

On top of the inappropriate remarks, the cost of your gym is exorbitant. Your least expensive package comes out to $1800 which is double the price of any other gym in Hoboken. You have some nerve charging this fee considering the rude management you have running the place. Good luck getting clients to join with this new price.

    Sincerely,

    New Club KO member”

    New Years Eve Funny Parody!

I know many folks who absolutely love Whole Foods Market (our closest one is over in Edgewater, NJ).

However, there are probably the same number of people (or more) who think they’re ridiculously over-priced. This post is for you guys!

I found this great parody of what a Whole Foods Market ad really means… titled “A-Hole Foods Market.”

Hope you enjoy it (click image to see the entire document – I happen to particularly enjoy the asparagus “discount” – cracks me up!)

    12/31/2008:

2008 was a rather tumultuous year in Hoboken (as well as the rest of the country)!

Besides a new president being elected and the economy going down the drain – many things made headlines on a local level. What topic do you feel had the most “buzz” in Hoboken in 2008?

    hoboken-buzz-2008-biggest-stories-of-the-year-hoboken411.jpg

Trouble with City Hall – and your tax dollars

The City of Hoboken was really battered and bruised this year. From Tax Collectors getting sued, budget debacles and property taxes skyrocketing, to educational concerns, the state takeover and open space issues – City Hall was extremely busy! Oh, but we had a nice cave open up by the water.

The Economy – and how it affected Hoboken

Even though layoffs in the financial industry affected many people – a large number of Hoboken residents got squeezed as well. Another issue is the deflation of the real estate market. With big developers now “struggling,” along with the decreased demand – some feel that we haven’t even begun to see the full trickle-down effect. That, combined with the tax increases – who knows what 2009 will be like. But hey – we have a nice movie theater coming! Shouldn’t cost more than a couple bucks, right?

    Businesses in General

Each year, businesses come and go in Hoboken. Some more cherished than others. A local favorite, Ted & Jo’s closed up – while a frustrating gym also skipped town. But despite that – new businesses come in and please residents. A delicious cupcake shop satisfied sweet teeth, and a burger joint filled bellies as well. The Merry-go-Round of shops in town never seems to get boring. And it 2009 – we’ll get to check out the first ever luxury Hotel – as the W Hotel opens it’s doors.

Flames are hot – and deadly!

Hoboken had it’s share of bad fires this year. With two deadly infernos at 1202 Hudson and 1203 Washington. The first major fire of 2008 was a dive bar that was gutted, quickly renovated and got a fresh new look. That bar now leads the “pub league” with the most noise complaints from neighbors.

    Infrastructure Crumbling apart

Hoboken’s sewage system is the pits. Water mains seem to be breaking at a more frequent pace than ever and flooding still takes place regularly. Additionally – despite some spotty fresh paving around town this year – the knee-deep potholes still outnumber the smooth roadways.

    Other top stories

From an alleged racist act involving a Turban at Madison Bar, to the big NJ Transit proposed development downtown, many other single events belong on the buzz list. Like that Lackawanna clock tower, the Giants winning the Super Bowl, a former Councilman finally finishing his DUI court case, but there are too many others to name!

What do you think had the most overall buzz in 2008?

    And the Winner is…

    Lookout for Bogus Placards

“I saw this story on an NYPD message board and thought it was pretty outrageous.

Well last night in front of the Julianna (right on the corner of 6th), I saw a vehicle with the same bogus placard. The guy in that news story had vehicles registered in NY so I don’t know if this guy is related or not, but hopefully if any Hoboken411 reader’s see this clown parked illegally in town, they will report it.

I would be willing to bet 95% of citizens and HPU employees would not know this is totally bogus. Any legit law enforcement placard would have the agency’s information on it. As a law enforcement officer myself, it really annoys me to see someone impersonating an officer or agent.”

Hoboken Photo of the Day – 12/30/2008

For some strange reason – this photo had been “open” on my computer for many days – and as I was about to close down my applications (so my computer can “rest”), I noticed it was still there. So rather than it getting lost in the sea of digital photos I take – here’s today’s 411 pic of the day (Elysian Park – with Maxwell Place in the background).

    Parting Words

Parting Words is a timely blue-collar comedy with an unusual storyline, a lot of laughs and a lot of heart. Everyday folk who are “just trying to get by” form the cast and neighborhood setting for this film to which everyone can all too quickly relate. This story follows the dysfunctional relationship of Vince, Nick and Eddie, three 30-year old men and their childhood best friend, Laura. A little too good-looking and a lot too wild, an intoxicated Laura gets the pot boiling with a shocking toast at her friends’ wedding. The resulting emotional disaster takes the guys, their wives and their small town on a laughter-and-tears journey that dismantles, then reassembles each couple and takes them to a place far better than where they began.

Beautifully shot in HD24P, Parting Words is one of the pioneering digital-era features. Produced on location in Hoboken, New Jersey and the surrounding areas, the cast and crew were assembled from the local New York City talent pool.
