Hoboken Photo of the Day – 11/30/2008

The other day, a couple Hoboken411 readers sent in some pics of what appeared to be some kind of “Drunk vs. Defenseless Potted Plant” incident over on Washington Street across from City Hall.

Below – it seems as if more drunks got extreme pleasure by ruining something that Helmer’s Restaurant provides free of charge to beautify the neighborhood.

I took this picture on my way to the Elysian Park Dog run (and where I got that awesome watercolor-esque NYC skyline photo!)

PS – if you have images collecting dust on your camera or hard drive – send them in for eventual inclusion on Hoboken411! Please state how you’d like to be credited in your email, and a description – if desired!!

    11/30/2008:

Reporter and Television Anchorman Bob Bowdon, who moderated several Council Election debates in Hoboken last year – has an interesting forum coming up tomorrow in New York City:

    barack-obama-and-al-sharpton.jpg

Does the Election of Barack Obama Portend the Effective End of American Racism?
Barack Obama’s 2004 Democratic Convention speech made reference to inner city black children with books being mocked by their classmates for “Acting White.” Will these smart children now have a new answer, “Acting White? No, I’m acting like the President!” — laying an inspirational foundation for their better educational outcomes and better futures? Or are the problems of inner city children far too entrenched, with failing schools, gang violence and too few male role models, for the election of a President to materially affect their lives?

And will Barack Obama’s rise to the highest office in the land change how African-Americans see opportunity, spurring more black entrepreneurs into business and increasing the general belief that success in America is possible? Or does that ignore a historical truth — that enthusiasm for any political candidate is inherently fleeting once the rough and tumble of modern Beltway politics takes its inevitable toll — and that Obama’s ability to inspire people might wane, right along with his newness?

The event is free and open to the public, provided an online RSVP has been entered on the Foundation website. For more information, and to RSVP, please visit:http://www.thesmithfamilyfoundation.org

Hoboken411 reader Ryan provided a simple, yet vaguely artistic image that is 100% Hoboken. I like it!

[Stay tuned for tomorrow's Readerpix entry! - Note: one reader's photo(s) will be featured each day at approximately 11am. Unless your photo is time-sensitive - it will be published in the order it was received! Additional note: Your pictures will have a better chance of being published if they're in "landscape" mode, as opposed to the taller "portrait" modes... ]

    November

    11/30/2008:

Hoboken Fire Department is on scene at 560 Marshall Drive (Apartment 2E) for a working fire and heavy smoke conditions.

Luckily, this 8-story building is protected by sprinklers and firemen are reporting that other than the smoke, the fire appears extinguished. It was also an un-occupied apartment. They’re evacuating the building as a precaution.
