Hoboken411 reader Mike caught this mini-construction site downtown today. Since TD Banknorth acquired Commerce Bank last year – they now feel it’s necessary to spend money on fixing their sidewalk signs… Good job!

I thought this was just another SPAM message about money or prescription drugs, but an email sent to Hoboken411 yesterday was legit!

“Jan” – who is an aspiring patrolman in Hoboken, Belgium (a suburb of Antwerp) said he visited the police headquarters here in Hoboken, New Jersey. He emailed me to help him find an email address. Jan said:
“I am a police officer in Hoboken, Belgium. In the month June this year I visited the police station in Hoboken New Jersey. An officer named Jimmy Miller was very kind to us. He gave us his email address and we tried several times to send an email but the email always came back to us. I have even looked for an email address of the police station in Hoboken but the website is not working.“
OK, I have a couple things to note about this:

(FYI – these were random pictures of Hoboken, Belgium… not that Jan sent them in…)

Bankrupt businesses – bailouts across the board – Banks failing – Stocks headed south…
With the economy on shaky grounds – Hoboken411 reader “donteatthat” doesn’t think it has to be so difficult:

“Hey 411 – I was just breaking things down with my roommate on the $700B bailout and the cost to taxpayers. Have you seen anything that breaks it down per individual or per individual tax return?
My math could be interesting or completely wrong… however, whether you compare the cost to either US population or the number of individual taxpayers the number is substantially lower than you would imagine. If you use the US population number of 305M as per world pop then the cost per individual is $23 per person. Even if you use the number of individual filers from 2003 of 130M then you are dealing with $54 per. Does this make any sense that the financial rescue plan can be so poorly marketed that there is such revolution?
No one is being asked to scrape up substantial amounts for the proposed cost. Have you heard of anything that broke it down or explained it this way? I personally think that I would give more than both of those amounts to save the global economy.
Regardless, I think that we could suggest a quick celebrity “we are the world” event and maybe save the global economy? Sally Struthers is already onboard. For a little bit more than a $1 per week, you can eradicate the financial crisis that we are all soon to suffer…”

Hoboken411 had recently received quite a few emails from neighbors of the Lounge 11 Bar (505 Madison St.) Recent disturbances, fights, noise and more are sources of discontent for area residents. They even got 3rd Ward Councilman Michael Russo involved.

Hoboken resident Matthew Walsh has successfully organized a meeting to attempt and straighten out the situation at hand:
We appreciate your offer to meet with us to discuss Lounge 11. We would like to set up a meeting with following parameters:
1) Confirmation that the meeting is (a) the coordinated response of the police and city council personally promised to Matt Walsh of 509 Madison Street by Mayor Roberts last Friday and (b) not an effort to circumvent this promised action by the city with a preemptive meeting with affected neighbors.
2) Discussion of problems caused by Lounge 11 inclusive of data referenced by Mayor Roberts to Matt Walsh indicating that the establishment is “a one-bar crime wave”.
3) Potential solutions:
4) Non-solution:
Putting Hoboken cops on the bar’s payroll as bouncers due to (a) conflict of interest between officer financial benefit from bar and duty to serve and protect community as a whole, (b) prior police support of bar owners (e.g. stopping by bar, having owners turn down music and then saying “what noise?” when investigating noise complaints) and (c) risk of off-duty officers being injured or disabled while working at bar and then recuperating at taxpayer expense,
5) Consequences of further violence and other quality of life infractions (e.g. excessive noise, vandalism and double parking)
Thank you.

Remember that story on Hoboken411 a few days ago about Hoboken was ranked third in Business Week’s “Hardest hit communities” list?
Well our local Channel 7 Eyewitness News ran a quick segment on it this evening. They featured realtor Anthony Petruzzelli who talked about buying and renting, as well as Imago Beauty Group who talked about discounted lotions and creams, and necessity vs. unneeded luxury items.

9/29/2008 Update:
Hoboken411 received an email from 4th Ward Councilwoman Dawn Zimmer – advising that this weeks nominations for the vacant seat on the Hoboken Housing Authority will be pulled from this weeks council meeting. She inquired with Corporation Counsel Steve Kleinman, as she felt the path the council was taking to fill the vacant spot was not following the law.
The city will now accept applications for the seat for the next 30 days – and forwarded to the council for review. Applicants will be able to attend the November 5th meeting – and the council can interview them or make future appointments if they feel necessary.
Zimmer said “I believe Hector Claveria brings a very strong financial background that would be an asset to the Housing Authority Board and Housing Authority residents. I look forward to reviewing and considering all applicants’ credentials for the position before making my final decision.” She added “The vacancy on the Housing Authority board is supposed to be published on the City’s web site by the end of today, on the City Clerk’s bulletin board, and the City Clerk should have applications available for members of the public to complete.”
9/19/2008 Recap:

What was supposed to be the quickest City Council meeting in years turned into high political drama over the proposed re-appointment of Angel Alicea to the Hoboken Housing Authority board.
The HHA controls housing for thousands of people. The biggest concentration is in the 4th ward, where Election Day is also “payday” for hundreds of people compensated for their “time” when the political machine needs them to “get out the vote.” Ruben Ramos first tapped into that voter pool when he became the 4th ward Councilman in 1999. He used it again to run for Council-at-Large with David Roberts in 2001 and 2005, and for Assembly in 2007.
