Auto smash & grabs on Hudson St.

July

7/31/2008:

One Hoboken411 reader wants to let residents know about a “targeted” area for car break-ins:

Hudson St. car break-ins

“I was wondering if you might be able to spread the word about a series of smash and grabs incidents for cars parked around the 700 block of Hudson street. I live on 8th/Hudson and walk past the area going to the path every day. In the past several months I have noticed several vehicles with smashed drivers side windows or seen lots of glass smashed on the sidewalk/road. I’ve probably noticed about one vandalized car a month so whoever is doing it is smart to not do it all the time and draw attention to it.

I don’t know if Hoboken PD is aware of the problem. If they are, they probably can’t do much about it. I feel bad for the people who park there and don’t know. Its mostly nicer cars that are targeted. There is glass there today and its been on the ground since Monday as evidence.

The area targeted is by the big grassy hill that leads up to the Steven’s parking lot. The grassy hill provides some seclusion (no houses on that side) so its obvious why they have chosen to target cars on that side of the street.

I was thinking of putting some flyers up to make people aware but it probably won’t do much good since people don’t read signs.”

    7/31/2008 Update:

Forgot to mention that the “Greetings from Hoboken” postcard exhibit was extended through August 3rd.

Additionally, a companion book was published too!

Come for the book, stay for the cake!

hoboken-postcard-history-historical-museum.jpgMuseum members and the general public are invited to a reception on Sunday, August 3, from 2-5pm. to celebrate the arrival of the companion book, Greetings from Hoboken: A Postcard History, based on our current exhibition. All those who made a donation in support of the project will receive their hardcover copy of the book at the reception. A limited number of hardcover and extra copies of the softcover editions will be available for purchase as well ($35 / $25). The book was edited by Bob Foster, Museum Director, and designed by McKevin Shaughnessy.

Nearly 400 of these brightly colored images are on display through Sunday, August 3, in an exhibition of postcards from the Museum’s own collections that presents a lively portrait of a booming young city, proud of its fine homes, new businesses and thriving shipping industry. And check out the Upper Gallery display of winning postcard designs by Hoboken School chirldren!

    12/28/2007:

Since the Hoboken Historical Museum will be closed through January 19th, those of you suffering from “Museum Withdrawal” can be rest assured that two nice new exhibits will open up for your historical pleasure on Sunday January 20th, from 2-5pm.

The big event is the “Greetings from Hoboken: A Postcard History,” which covers the city’s boom years from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s, as well as “Waterfront as Muse: 1960’s Photographs by Guy Ciarcia,” which is an award-winning photographer’s re-interpretation of photos he took in his younger years of the NYC skyline and Hudson County Waterfront.

    See you there!

Here’s another shining example of how the city just doesn’t pay attention.

This sign on 4th Street is what, 10 years old?

Funny thing is, our “Tree City USA” sign a couple blocks away gets promptly updated!

  • Hoboken Reporter sham letter to the editor

    July

    7/30/2008:

Here’s today’s Hoboken411 reader mail segment about the letters to the editor section of the local paper.

Does the Reporter make backroom deals?

“I’m a longtime follower of your site, and appreciate the fact that you seem to be able to keep a lot of the paid posters that permeate other forums (like some cheesy Jersey web pages) off your site, probably by being at least somewhat vigilant about tracking multiple user names and the like.

    hoboken-reporter-headquarters-papers-end-up-on-curb-anyway-reader-mail.jpg

Wish the Hoboken Reporter would take even a small percentage of that initiative and vet some of the letter-writers that darken their back pages every week (though I’ve long believed the Reporter is in for their cut of the backroom take in this town anyway, so I shouldn’t be surprised).

This week’s example: a letter urging all Hoboken taxpayers to support the URSA/Tarragon Western Edge Development plan, one cited as the only option, outside of raising our property taxes, for the open space and pool we’ve been promised since, I believe, the Eisenhower administration.

The gist of the writer’s plea is this, that “…The proposed plan for the Western Edge seems to do that with parks and playgrounds included in the plan. Unless we are willing to pay higher taxes, which I am not, we need to support plans that have new open space included…”

The letter is signed by Ralph Santiago of Hoboken.

Well, good news Ralph. You won’t have to pay higher property taxes—according to the state property database, you already currently pay none (at least in Hoboken). . So you’re prayers are answered.

I’m tired of all these paid shills coming out of the woodwork who try to piss on my leg and tell me it’s raining. I would’ve hoped the editors would have weeded out this weak lobbying attempt (it took about 30 seconds of research), but hopefully most of the voters in town can see these weak efforts for what they are.

    Thanks for your time!”

  • Manny Ramirez trade rumors

    July

    7/31/2008:

manny-ramirez-boston-red-sox-trade-2.jpgAs many of you probably already know, there is lots of action & rumors brewing up as the MLB trade deadline approaches this afternoon. The biggest one being Boston’s Manny Ramirez.

Even if I was a big Red Sox fan, I wouldn’t like Ramirez. Cocky, arrogant, and lazy. Some ESPN commentators said Boston would be stupid to trade away his “production” at the plate, and would be unable to fill his spot in the lineup.

    From ESPN:

“The Red Sox don’t deserve a player like me,” Ramirez said. “During my years here, I’ve seen how they [the Red Sox] have mistreated other great players when they didn’t want them to try to turn the fans against them.

“The Red Sox did the same with guys like Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez, and now they do the same with me. Their goal is to paint me as the bad guy,” Ramirez added. “I love Boston fans, but the Red Sox don’t deserve me. I’m not talking about money. Mental peace has no price, and I don’t have peace here.”

    My thoughts about Manny Ramirez:

chris-monty-dannys-upstairs-comedy-show.jpgDanny’s Upstairs Comedy Show tonight at Tutta Pasta features comedian Chris Monty. Starts at 9pm.

“Chris began his Comedy Club resume at Governor’s in Levittown Long Island in the late ’90’s. He later teamed up with fellow comedian Marc Lund to create Long Island’s Funniest Comedy Team of Monty & Lund. It was in the team that Chris got his first break. Monty & Lund were asked to open for Gabe Kaplan (from TV’s Welcome Back Kotter) at McGuire’s Comedy Club. The show was a smash. Eventually Chris decided he wanted to go back solo as a comedian. He later was asked to open for Jimmy “JJ” Walker (from TV’s “Good Times”) at the same club. Now he performs regularly all over the country including such rooms as The Borgata Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City. He also has opened for such acts as Bobby Slayton, Jim David, Adam Ferrera, and Jim Norton.”

Here’s one of his stand-up routines:

    July

    7/31/2008:

Meant to post this a while ago, but for the PATH riders that aren’t already aware, you can now conveniently refill your SmartLink card online. (Thanks to Halley Wolowiec for the tip – I rarely ride the train these days…)

Do any of you use the SmartLink Card?

    hoboken-path-smartlink.jpg

    No more credit cards?

However, one Hoboken411 reader mentioned that the ticket machines no longer accept credit cards… Is that true?

“I’m not sure if you have been told that none of the vending machines at the path station (Hoboken and WTC) are accepting credit cards. Its funny how NJTransit just started a promo to automatically refill the Smartlink card online. Is this coincidence??”

This 1,500 square foot 3BR apartment at the Archstone building is $5285 per month! If you (and a few friends) have $63,420 burning a hole in your pockets, why not rent it?

    Archstone Website.

One thing I love about that ad is that there’s no interior pictures of the apartment itself. The courtyard, the exquisite architecture, the fabulous lobby (that you’ll spend a total of 2 minutes per day in), and some pictures of the NYC skyline. Don’t forget the “Seal of Service” too!

    Sign me up pronto!
