Man beaten in anti-gay bias attack in Hoboken

Two thugs beat up a man after leaving the PATH station in Hoboken in what police are calling an anti-gay bias attack.

The men, police say, taunted the victim, a 21-year-old Bayonne resident, for wearing pink pants, and then followed him out of the train just after 4:30 a.m. Friday and pummeled him. He needed 12 stitches to his face, reports said.

Police arrested Hoboken High School student Andy Rivera, 19, of Marshal Drive at 2 p.m. yesterday in Hoboken and charged him with bias intimidation and aggravated assault. They have a warrant out for the arrest of the other man, police said.

Rivera and the other man followed him up the stairs and attacked him near a candy store on the concourse in Hoboken Terminal, police said.

The the victim was punched two or three times in the face and one of the blows lacerated his cheek while another left him with a black eye, reports said.

The victim was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries and given 12 stitches on his face, police said. Police were able to identify Rivera from surveillance cameras in the area, reports said.

  • Reader Mail: Snow Removal

    27

    February

Here’s a letter about a topic that seems to come up year after year. The responsibility of property owners in Hoboken, and how well they care for the sidewalks thousands of pedestrians traverse each time it snows. I for one, pay much more attention to the various sidewalk material and how it’s shoveled. Surfaces such as slate get extremely slippery and have taken a few spills here in town during the last decade.

    He writes:

    snowy-sidewalk.jpgDear Hoboken411,

After last week’s snow fall, I found the conversation with other Hoboken residents the same as every year…

Does Hoboken have a city ordinance on snow removal and if so, who enforces it? Who’s responsibility is it to clear sidewalks and other pedestrian locations, i.e.
bus stops and crosswalks at intersections?

Walking to the PATH train everyday and back home in the evenings, I found myself and others walking in ridiculous patterns to avoid slipping on the unremoved snow that had remained on the sidewalk since the morning walk to work. Jumping over mounds of snow that had frozen at crosswalks was nothing new either.

Hopefully someone will know the answers to these problems the residents of Hoboken face every time in snows.

    Thanks,
    Tony

  • Hoboken411 Tech Tips - Blocking

    27

    February

blocked.jpgSo, City Hall has apparently begun blocking access to Hoboken411. I guess that’s another sign that you’ve “made it” in Hoboken. What about at your job? Are they cutting back on what you can and cannot see online? Not a problem!

From RSS readers, text messages, anonymous surfing sites, and others, there’s a way around almost anything! Don’t let anyone censor what you can and cannot see! It’s a free country, damnit!

Here are many different ways to keep you in the loop regarding the buzz in Hoboken. Don’t say I never offered any help!

Hey tech-gurus out there, anything else you can recommend?

    RSS readers

hoboken-411-rss-readers.gifOn the left side of the screen here, towards the bottom, you’ll see a few links for RSS readers. RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” and allows for the articles and comments to be “delivered” many different ways.

Those buttons are just suggestions, however, you can pick whatever “reader” sites you wish. I personally use Bloglines, but I’ve heard that Google Reader is really taking the lion’s share these days.

Hoboken411 uses Feedburner to manage it’s feeds. Regardless of which site you use, here are the links for for both the new articles and comments:

    http://feeds.feedburner.com/hoboken411.com/
    http://feeds.feedburner.com/CommentsForHoboken411/

    ZapTXT

411-blocked-animated.gifThis is a very interesting and powerful feature of Hoboken411. I’ve written a general description about this already on the site.

    http://hoboken411.com/archives/5420

Basically, ZapTXT lets you pick what you want to see, and how it gets delivered. You can even have comments sent to your phone via text message! Also, comments or articles can be sent to you via email or even instant messenger. If you’re blocked at work, just sign up for these services from your home PC, and stay in touch all day!

I think this is a great service for business owners especially. You can sign up to monitor what people are saying about your store, bar or restaurant. Like having the “suggestion box” delivered right to your doorstep!

    Email Subscription

I’ve never really publicized this feature, but it’s available. I was testing out FeedBlitz a few months ago, and it seems to work pretty well. There are two subscription options to choose from. Pick one or both, and once a day, a “summary” of all articles and/or comments made on Hoboken411 are delivered right to your inbox.

I’ve put a subscription sign up box for both articles and comments below. If you choose to use both, many times the comments and new articles are sent in the same email.

    Anonymous Surfing

There are many sites out there that allow you to access restricted sites anonymously. Some work better than others. Often times, they can mess up the formatting of the site, making it unreadable.

However, I’ve recently tried “Mister Privacy“, and it seemed to keep the site’s formatting intact. Make sure you use the following settings when surfing:

    misterprivacy.gif

There are other methods, such as using Google Translate (you translate from Spanish to English), but that doesn’t seem to work too well, and it messes up the formatting pretty badly.

    February

A message from the Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corps, which responds to over 5000 emergency 911 calls a year in Hoboken without ever charging a patient or getting personal compensation:

Can you please tell Hobokenites with clean empty water gallon jugs or coffee cans to bring them this week to HVAC headquarters on Tuesday instead of putting them out for recycling? The best time will be about 7pm when the shift changes, because they are most likely to have a crew in the building then, rather than out on a call.

We will be making up donation jugs to leave in the bars before the parade and will pick them up after the parade. If anyone can help drop off the jugs at the bars on Thursday or Friday, that would also be a big help.

    Thank you!

Hoboken cop assaulted in late-night pizza joint scuffle

HOBOKEN — A police officer was assaulted after trying to break up a rowdy argument in a pizza restaurant early yesterday morning, according to police reports.

Rory William Higgs, 23, of Nassau in the Bahamas, who gave a temporary address on Coles Street in Jersey City, was charged with disorderly conduct, aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest, police said.

The police officer was in Imposto Restaurant & Pizza on Washington Street Sunday at 1:05 a.m. when he saw Higgs and a female companion arguing with another woman near a restroom, reports said.

After Higgs began yelling at the woman, the uniformed officer tried to separate the pair but Higgs pushed the cop in the chest, cursing him out, reports said.

The suspect then began to punch and kick the officer, police sources said. Higgs was finally arrested with the help of customers and police officers who arrived at the scene, reports said.

Higgs continued to yell obsenities at the officers at the station, police said. The arresting officer was treated at the headquarters by staff from the Jersey City Medical Center for pain in his right hand, reports said.
