NYE Mugging

December

305 Bloomfield Street, a male indicated he got assaulted by four black males. Car 125 indicated that he needed some backup, as there were a large group of trouble-making individuals still in the area.

Yes, you can still have a party and update 411 if you so choose!

Next, the fireworks!

This is in Weehawken, but Hoboken PD has been called in for mutual aid. Near the boat slip by the Chart House, it’s reported a huge fight with many injuries has broken out. Surrounding towns have been called in for assistance.

What could they be fighting over? Filet Mignon?

I wonder what they’re putting in the drinking water these days.

    12/31/2006:

    Here’s a video from News 12.

    ——-

3:27pm. Smoke is reported to be coming out of the building at 417 Jackson St. again. What happened to the fire watch?

    12/30/2006:
As many of you may have known, there was a big four alarm fire today on Jackson Street between 4th and 5th Streets. Many residents unfortunately displaced for the start of the new year.

Hoboken411 and it’s readers covered the toughest fire of 2006 as it happened. See the minute-by-minute recap after the break, plus additional photos. Thanks Matt for the dozens of incredible action shots, and Tom for some apparatus shots, as well as David, Tony and an anonymous cell phone picture. See all the reader-submitted pictures below. Over 40 pictures total! Plus a brief write-up on News12.com.

No week in review this week. Instead, here’s some pix a reader sent in of this skywriter over the skies of Hoboken late this morning.

You can let your imagination run wild as to what this was supposed to be. However, it appeared to spell “Who”. What was that supposed to mean? Who are you going to vote for in the May elections?

Have a great New Year everyone!

    30

    December

After hearing some rumblings for a good part of the day about the HPD awaiting the Coast Guard and some incident by the water, plus other emails from readers indicating helicopters and a big police presence by South Constitution Court, I decided to walk down there and see what was going on.

I managed to snap a few pictures before a gang of New York detectives begun questioning me, asking for ID, etc. They indicated it was an “active investigation” on that Cornucopia boat. They wouldn’t elaborate, naturally. They also said I wasn’t supposed to be there because the area was cordoned off (like it looked any different with all the construction in the area?) I presume the Port Authority and NYPD were there because the entire Hudson River is under New York jurisdiction.

They had the K-9 unit there as well as a some truck on the pier. Not sure if that truck had always been there or not. Couldn’t make out what was written on the side.

What do you think this is? Dead bodies? Drugs? Illegal aliens?

  • The Sublet Experiment

    29

    December

sublet2.gifThe Sublet Experiment. A traveling play. But in ordinary apartments rather than theaters.

Hoboken is featured February 1st through 4th at 823 Washington Street. Tickets are $20 and available on their website. Details below.

Actual NYC Apartments Provide the Setting for The Sublet Experiment

The Sublet Experiment, a new romantic comedy by Ethan Youngerman, will begin an open-ended run on November 16th. Instead of using a conventional theater, The Sublet Experiment, which is set entirely in a New York City apartment, will be presented in a different apartment each weekend. Directed by Michelle Tattenbaum, the production will travel from neighborhood to neighborhood across the five boroughs and be performed for an audience of twelve at a time.

In The Sublet Experiment, a serial sublettor, a reality show reject and the worst bank robbers in history collide. It is a comic thriller about love, identity and identity theft as two young people try to find themselves but end up finding each other.

“There’s something similar about apartments and relationships - a new relationship, like a new apartment, is a chance to re-invent yourself,” says playwright Ethan Youngerman. “And New Yorkers are so obsessed with real estate because where you live has a huge effect on how you live.”

    subletexperiment.jpg

“Performing the play in different apartments,” director Michelle Tattenbaum points out, “also enables us to discover to what extent the play re-invents itself in each new venue. Is the play different in Astoria than it is in Harlem?”

  • Hoboken411 business year in review

    29

    December

h411forlocals3.gifI was trying to come up with some kind of “Year End” article. I finally decided it was too exhausting to try and re-cap the entire year in a single post.

As always, you can see the heavily discussed and obviously popular items on the bottom of the right sidebar “Most commented posts” for those things. Some of the rare fires in town, see the “Recent Fires” link on the left sidebar. To see capsules of the weekly reviews click the “Week in Review” link, also on the left sidebar. Easy enough, right?

Besides the news events, debacles, politics and crime, we had lots of fun in 2006 as well. The five rounds of “Where is this?” photo quiz (1, 2, 3, 4, 5), the sarcastic “Motivational Hoboken Posters” users sent in HERE and HERE, the wacky Hoboken Hawk, a satirical Hoboken City Magazine and much more! So much happened this year, I just gave up trying to sum it all up. It would just take too long.

Instead, I figured I’d slap together a quick list of all businesses that either left, or are leaving soon, plus all new businesses, either opened or announced in 2006. Since Hoboken411 went live early April 2006, some items may be missing from this list.

Here’s a rough idea of the stats:

    • 31 businesses either closed (or closing soon), moved, combined operations or “retired.”
    • 58 new businesses were announced or opened in 2006 (10 of which should open in 2007.)

See below for the entire list! Anything that is missing, please let us know! Have a great 2007!

  • Councilmen and parking tickets

    29

    December

    12/29/2006 Update:

Tying up some loose ends here. Spoke with Michael Cricco today, and him and his family indeed still have to pay parking tickets. Below is the receipt for the two tickets that his daughter received during that time. While he didn’t receive that last ticket when the officers gave him a courtesy chance (like they do very often for many double-parkers and cars by hydrants,) it shows that even council members are not immune.

Of course many residents with curb-cuts and driveways will possibly have more options in the future (read that council recap HERE.)

    criccoticket.gif

    9/26/2006:
It seems as if there’s a fine line for the members of city government and breaking the law.

One of our council members, Michael Cricco, at 1024 Bloomfield St. has a double parked car in front of his home tonight. The officer called it in and found out who it was, and indicated “he’s a hero, so let’s let him go”. They suggested ringing his bell and advising him to move it. How often does that happen to you due to the lack of parking? Most of us are not so lucky, although the Hoboken Police do occasionally offer a courteous siren or ring of the bell. But there’s no guarantee you’d be so fortunate.

But being a council member doesn’t necessarily make you exempt from summonses either, as he has two tickets in the past two days. One yesterday and one already today. Does he ever have to pay those tickets? Or are they dismissed? I have no idea.

I understand his “exemplary” efforts during that recent fire at 1100 Washington Street, however, being a member of city government, shouldn’t you be setting an example always rather than just some of the time? If he has issues parking even his own car, maybe some suggestions to alleviate the parking woes in Hoboken should be on his agenda.

But since we don’t know the whole story, it could have been a family member with the car registered in his name. Still not good to have these events attached to your name, right?
