Feral cat trappers needed in Hoboken

Added: Another person you can contact is Joe. If you’re interested in helping email joemiscione@hotmail.com.

8/22/2008:

OK, it seems as if there’s a Hoboken “cat-i-demic” going on, especially uptown.

hoboken-empty-lot-uptown-15th-and-washington-cats-kittens.jpg

Apparently, there is a small “colony” of feral cats near the Hudson Tea Building (in the lot between 14th and 15th, Bloomfield and Washington). A couple Hoboken411 readers wrote in, and need help rescuing them (i.e., volunteers).

Companion Animal Trust needs help with feral cats

Carol, from Companion Animal Trust wrote:

“If you are feeding feral cats and/or do Trap Neuter Return we would like to meet you. There is a colony in the north end of Hoboken that needs to be TNRd and we are organizing an effort to trap and release them.

Would you like to assist with this? If so, contact companionanimaltrust@yahoo.com.

While Joe wrote:

Hoboken lacks animal control

“I would like bring to the community’s attention the issue of lack of any type of Animal Control in Hoboken.

I live in North Hoboken, near Hudson Tea and the empty lot there is loaded with stray cats who are having many kittens (it is not safe there for kittens). I called Frank Sasso, animal control officer, but he said that the city has no mechanism to deal with the issue (the proper solution is a Trap/Neuter/Release program or a neuter scooter).

I have enlisted the help of some volunteer groups, but they are overstretched and under funded and a properly run municipality should not neglect important services and hope that good Samaritans pick up the slack. I’d like to raise awareness and gather names of those who would like to petition city hall with me on this issue.”

Here’s the weekly picture of the Official Hoboken411 mascot Oscar.

He waits patiently anytime I go into a store to pick something up. Can you guess where this picture was taken?

Here’s an email from Hoboken411 reader Martha:

    Wild pack of kitties

    “Hey, Hoboken411—

Cat owners should know that there is a small but persistent cat presence amongst the dumpsters on the city lot at the end of Willow, between Observer and Newark. This Sunday I spotted two cats, one friendly, one not, walking around the lot. The smaller, friendlier one actually ventured into the parking lot next door, and seemed pretty friendly to my husband and me, despite the fact that we were walking with our cat-disliking dog.

Someone or someone’s leaving a lot of food for these cats…I didn’t take any pictures of that, but there was a fresh plate of dry food laid out for them on the sidewalk, and lots of water-logged cat food cans. Maybe one or both of these cats once belonged to someone, or maybe not. However, it’s definitely a place to check if you’ve lost your cat, as there seems to be a plentiful supply of food there, and easy places to hide amongst the dumpsters.

    Keep up the good work!”

    7/29/2008 Update:

    Another dog success story!

    hoboken-dixie-chick-found-a-home.jpg

    Dixie no longer homeless

“I just wanted to send you a wonderful update that Miss Dixie Chick has been adopted! Although it took longer than I had expected, Dixie has been adopted by a wonderful family whom have her best interests at heart. Dixie left Hoboken Unleashed on Friday afternoon to go to her new home. I have since heard from her new family and I am happy to report that Dixie is adjusting extremely well.

I also wanted that send gracious thanks to Hoboken Unleashed for giving Dixie a place to stay and a chance for a happy life; And to M. Avery Designs for making Dixie a new ‘Adopt Me” vest when her old one fell casualty at the dog park; and finally, thanks to Hoboken411 and its readers because without your support, Dixie may not have been another success story to write about.

Also, to those who are curious, the adoption fee that had been asked for Dixie was 100% donated to the Liberty Humane Society (Dixie’s new family actually made a donation for twice the adoption fee after hearing the fee would be donated).

    Keep up the fantastic work!!!”

A Hoboken411 reader would like to know if you’re in the market for a new puppy!

    hoboken-dog-up-for-adoption-shadow.jpg

Shadow needs a new loving home

“The dog is half Boston terrier and half pug. Brindle in color and weighs about 20 lbs right now. Expected growth will only be 30 lbs. Dog has ALL of its shots and is very healthy. Very good with kids. Reason for placing dog for adoption is the fact that we can’t care for the dog the way we use to and would like to with a newborn on our hands. If you are willing to provide time for love and compassion then please email me at crmpuff82@aol.com.”

    7/28/2008 Update/Review:

I have to take a moment here to tell you all about Arturo Amaya, and the “What’s Up Dog” walking/sitting service. I know some of you might not be comfortable with the whole “pack of dogs” system he uses, but I think he’s the best dog walker servicing Hoboken.

Normally, I have a network of dog-owning friends that can watch Oscar when I need to escape Hoboken, but I was in a bind a couple times in the past month. Since I see Arturo every now and then at the dog park, I figured I’d give him a call. He’s always friendly, pleasant and has an excellent (and authoritative) discipline with the dogs. He happily watched my dog overnight, took him on many walks, and kept him occupied. When I got Oscar back, he seemed very content, worn out, and satisfied.

So I needed Arturo to watch him again one more time recently, and I have to tell you, Oscar was happy as hell to see him! That is a great sign of a good dog-watcher/walker when after only one time, your pet eagerly greets him! He’ll be my go-to guy from now on.

Oh, and to make me feel even more comfortable as to what Oscar was doing, he sent me these pictures. Unbelievably cute! Highly recommended by 411!

  • Canine Influenza Alert

    26

    July

    7/26/2008:

    Have a dog?

Here’s what one Hoboken411 reader wants you to know:

    hoboken-new-jersey-canine-influenza-outbreak.jpg

Canine Influenza outbreak in New Jersey

“Just thought that since a majority of your readers seem to be dog owners, you may want to post this. In Mercer County, over the past few weeks, the first cases of Canine Influenza have been confirmed.

There was a boarding shelter on Route 1 in West Windsor that shut down for 2 weeks to sterilize their facility after a half dozen dogs were sick after being boarded there. You may be thinking that Mercer is far from Hudson, but the reality is, this flu has made its way up from Texas, so we should be careful. (There were also confirmed cases in Sussex and Burlington counties). Dogs do not have a natural immunity to the disease so they’re strongly suggesting that places such as kennels, dog parks, groomers, pet stores and doggie daycare centers should be visited with caution. Basically, any social situation puts a dog at risk (i.e. the Dog Party at Church Square Park this weekend).

I dropped off my pooch at Hoboken Unleashed this morning and they said they were aware the flu was going around, but did not have any dogs in their facility that had been sick in the recent weeks.

Symptoms appear about 2-5 days after exposure include fever and cough, which can last up to 3 weeks.

Just want to advise all of the other puppy parents out there to BE CAREFUL!!!”
