    2010 Dog Park Maintenance

    3/19/2010 Update:

Hoboken Dog parks get face lift

As you can read in this thread – Hoboken411 naturally started advocating for the upkeep of the city’s dog runs right around the time I hired the official mascot Oscar.

And one of the issues many dog owners have had over the years, was the proper upkeep of the dog run conditions – rocks, tools, hoses, water, etc. The main problem was that the city either didn’t have the money, or communication wires got disconnected at city hall. It typically took about a year to get any action.

So today’s post serves as your “18 month maintenance update” – as a few Hoboken dog runs got a fresh supply of rocks this week (Elysian, Church Square).

Dog ownership is a serious commitment!

This black Lab apparently was chained to the fence for many hours this morning – and Hoboken411 reader Caroline said:

“Dog appears to be abandoned, shivering and frightened. Cops were called. Corner seventh and garden.”

In fact, if you’re listening to the Hoboken411 Live Police and Fire Action Channel – they’re trying to figure out what to do with this pooch as we speak!

    3/3/2010:

Hoboken411 reader Laura (who I got the famous Oscar from) – has another dog up for adoption. She sounds like a winner to me!

    Ain’t nothing but a Hound Mix…

“Claire is a 9 month old Hound mix.

As far as we know she was a street dog until the Liberty Humane Society got her. She was in the shelter for a month, where I volunteer and fell in love with her. Claire stands out right away. She is a beautiful dog with the greenest eyes. She loves to snuggle up close to you. She is a huge people person and LOVES children. She is up to date on all shots and is scheduled to be spayed. I can’t say enough good things about this dog. She knows basic commands is house broken and crate trained. She never barks and is good about only chewing her toys. Please call me to meet this amazing dog!”

For all the fan club members who’ve been asking for an updated Hoboken411 Mascot (Oscar) entry!

Hmmm, I’ve never had these! Sniff, sniff

Maroon Coffee (638 Willow Ave.) puts out quite a nice display table! Oscar was so interested in what was going on here, I gave him permission to check it out.

Have you had the waffles at Maroon? Who knew? How are they?

    1/30/2010 Reminder:

Don’t forget the Liberty Humane adoption van will be downtown tomorrow! Plus a special Valentines message!

    “Have a Heart” Day

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner! Before you run off to the Hallmark Store to buy those expensive Valentine’s cards, would you reconder giving that money to LHS’ animals instead?

On this special day in which we all celebrate love, could you find it in your heart to donate $25.00 to Liberty Humane Society’s Medical Fund? In return, we will send you a beautiful 2010 Liberty Tails Calendar that you can give to your “special Valentine” instead of that expensive Hallmark Card – or you can keep it for yourself!

Liberty Humane Society’s Medical Fund provides critical funding for the medical care and treatment of the thousands of homeless animals that come through our door each year. So many come to us sick with upper respiratory infections or ringworm, and are in need of costly medication and treatment.

It’s easy to make your donation! Simply log onto www.libertyhumane.org and go to the donation page. In the memo section, put “Have a Heart”! Or, you can mail your check to Liberty Humane Society, 235 Jersey City Boulevard, Jersey City 07305.

    1/18/2010 Update:

A nice happy ending to the dog adoption story!

Mike Kona dog adopted in Hoboken NJ cornerstone pets

Mike (now Kona) finds a loving Hoboken home!

Jeff from Cornerstone Pets (105 9th St.) sent in a nice conclusion to the “Adopt Mike” story!

    “Dear 411,
After spending over a month in our house, Mike has moved on to a new home. Before I go any further, Mike is now Kona.

Strangely enough, he was brought to C-PAW (Cornerstone Programs for Animal Welfare) by a guy named Mike and he was adopted by a guy named Mike, and his wife. To many Mike’s in the pot so they had to change the name. Training would have been a little tough.

We couldn’t me more thrilled with his new parents. It was a tough adoption because Mike had never been in a house before and never had and early socialization. Well, he’s a quick learner and I think a month with our dogs Baxter and Basil helped him learn a thing or two. We needed to find someone who wanted an energetic dog (he is obsessed with fetching and loves his toys) who is quick to learn but still needs some guidance, patience and training. Well, the perfect young couple came along looking for this exact dog. They run, walk, they travel and they wanted an energetic dog that would not just sit around. They took to Mike immediately and the rest is history. He’s now living the high life on the waterfront. They have already started working with a trainer to make sure the groundwork is set. They know the importance of putting in the time with a new pet.

During our first interview with the new parents (it was a week long process because we didn’t want Mike bounced around) the new dad said that if you put in six months of time when they are young you will have a good dog for the next 13 or so years. That was the clincher for me. I have since spoken with the new parents and they are thrilled with the adoption and mike is being an angel. They stopped in the store today with Kona and he couldn’t look happier.

Thanks 411 once again, for all you do to get the word out about dogs and cats that need good homes. You’re the best!”

Catch up with the whole saga after the jump!

    1/13/2010:

    Hoboken411 Mascot suffers borderline sickness

As you might have seen in this week’s archived photo gallery of Hoboken411 Mascot Oscar – that squirrels made a few appearances. Usually in shots where he was extremely focused and eager.

Well, my adorable pooch is getting worse with these critters. Not only does he remember each and every location he’s ever spotted one (and does a thorough check of the area, day or night) – he’s started becoming nutty even with anything that resembles a squirrel – like these figurines in the window at the Bliss Spa at the W Hotel.

Does your dog go bonkers when he or she sees one?
