    3/8/2010:

What’s up with the Hoboken School Lunches?

Since I don’t have any kids here in the Hoboken school system, it’s not always easy to be on top of each and every conundrum that takes place on a daily basis.

But apparently – something has gone awry with the school lunch debit card system (what ever happened to just paying cash for lunch? God, it’s been so long…), and now parents are getting bills for over-debiting their child’s account.

One parent (and Hoboken Realtor) writes about it on a blog – and another 411 reader and parent sent this photo in, saying:

“The Hoboken board of Ed sent home “bills” with students on Tuesday of last week which gave a name to make the checks payable to and a contact number, and that’s it. On Wednesday, they began refusing to feed the children who had received these notes, but failed to inform parents of these intentions. It took three days, and 46 phone calls to actually speak to someone, and learn that my sons account had a glitch, and the bill was being voided. What? How about all the other parents who haven’t gotten through yet? Needless to say, they were unable (unwilling?) to tell me what I owed the public school system money for, but quick to say after three days of denying him lunch, please disregard. My son did overhear something from teachers about Wallace owing the state 40 grand, but I don’t know the validity of that.”

Hoboken411 reached out to several Board of Education members, and will update the story (or comments) accordingly with their response.

  • BREAKING: Romano quits before Day 1

    02

    March

    3/2/2010:

    Romano Bails

Dr. Frank Romano is bailing on Hoboken.

Despite support from 7 of 9 Board of Education members who want Romano to be the next Superintendent of Schools, he now says he no longer feels “comfortable” with Hoboken and has withdrawn his name from consideration. Apparently a 3-year contact with a $190,000 starting salary and 3.5% annual raises wasn’t enough for the first-time Superintendent, who got cold feet when he saw how criticism from dissenting board members Maureen Sullivan and Carrie Gilliard led to an active public discussion of whether he was actually the right man for the job.

An active public turns Romano off

Romano was supported by the newest board members (Irene Sobolov and Ruth McCallister) as well as the longest serving (James Farina and Carmelo Garcia) but apparently couldn’t stomach public criticism of his selection. Romano used the excuse of an inability to come to terms on a contract renewal clause to bail on Hoboken. Sullivan and Gilliard were critical of the Romano choice and advocated for a more extensive search before breaking from “Kids First” over the choice. Gilliard is not seeking re-election, so her opposition to Romano would not have been a factor once he took the reigns from Interim Superintendent Peter Carter.

What now? Back to the search process.

Romano’s decision to bail could mean Carter could be asked to stay on the job longer while the search resumes for a new Superintendent. Yesterday 13 people filed to run for 4 board seats up for election in April. The choice of a new Superintendent may not be made before the new board is seated.

  • Read Across America Day

    01

    March

    3/1/2010:

Tomorrow, March 2nd starting at 9:30am at Connors School (2nd and Monroe)!

    Dr. Seuss helps kids read!

You are cordially invited to read your favorite Dr. Seuss book to the students of Connors Elementary School in celebration of Read Across America Day!

Read Across America was developed in May of 1997. A small reading task force at NEA came up with a big idea. “Let’s create a day to celebrate reading,” the group decided. “We hold pep rallies to get kids excited about football. Why don’t we do something to get kids excited about reading? We’ll call it ‘NEA’s Read Across America’ and we’ll celebrate it on Dr. Seuss’ birthday.” And so was born on March 2, 1998 the largest celebration of reading this country has ever seen.

Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and in creating lifelong successful readers. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school.

But why celebrate with Dr. Seuss? Dr. Seuss epitomizes a love of children and in learning. Also, his use of rhyme makes his books an effective tool for teaching young children the basic skills they need to be successful. When we celebrate Dr. Seuss and reading, we send a clear message to America’s children that reading is fun and important.

So let me ask you this question, “Would you like to take part in the celebration to motivate young minds to read?”

Time: Between 9:30 a.m. and 2:35 p.m. (at your convenience).
    RSVP: By Monday, March 1, 2010. 201-356-3684
